The League Cup final goes to a replay for the second year running after a goalless draw at Wembley. Forest win the replay at Old Trafford thanks to a controversial John Robertson penalty.  TV replays show that the foul occurred outside the penalty area. A crowd of 54,375 see Forest become the first team to win the League and League Cup double.

In the third League Cup Final in five years to need a replay, Liverpool win the trophy for the first time.  After a 1-1 draw at Wembley, a crowd of 36,693 see goals from KennyDalglish and Alan Hansen clinch the trophy for the Merseysiders at Villa Park.

Spurs come agonisingly close to winning their third League Cup after an 11th minute opportunist strike from Steve Archibald. A Ronnie Whelan strike in the 87th minute forces extra time, during which Whelan gets his second and Ian Rush seals the victory for the Reds.

Skrtel and Kuyt score for the Reds with Mason and Turner replying for the Blues.  The penalty shootout is notable as cousins Steven and Anthony Gerrard both miss spotkicks for their respective sides.

Lallana signs a 70,000 pounds a week five-year contract with Liverpool. The international will take the role of attacking midfielder with squad number is 20. He signs from Southampton a club he has been captain and made 250 appearances for. He is the second signing for Liverpool this summer and has cost the club £25 million pounds.

Liverpool signs Can from Bayer Leverkusen after meeting the £9.8 million buy out clause in his contract. The defensive midfielder has  made 29 appearances for his former club and scored 3 goals.He becomes the clubs’ third summer signing.

I want to thank the manager for trusting me and allowing me to play here. I am proud to be a part of the family and I am looking forward to playing here. It was an easy decision for me to sign with Liverpool as I had a very good chat with the manager, which clearly shows that he and the club wanted to sign me.

Liverpool announces that Suarez, the player involved in the biting incident, is going to Barcelona and has signed a five-year contract with the team. Spanish football and Bleacher Report UK expert Guillem Balague reports the deal is worth £64 million. The Reds confirm this on their official website:

Liverpool FC confirms that Luis Suarez will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona. We would like to thank Luis for his contribution and the role he played in helping bring Champions League football back to Anfield. Everyone at Liverpool Football Club wishes Luis and his family well for the future.

It is with a heavy heart that I leave Liverpool for a new life and new challenges in Spain. Both me and my family have fallen in love with this club and with the city. But most of all I have fallen in love with the incredible fans. You have always supported me and we, as a family, will never forget it, we will always be Liverpool supporters. I hope you can all understand why I have made this decision. This club did all they could to get me to stay, but playing and living in Spain, where my wife’s family live, is a lifelong dream and ambition. I believe now the timing is right.

When the game resumes Stephen Gerrard makes it two from a penalty spot in the 49th minute but Tottenham don’t seem to respond. Albert Moreno seals the lead in the 60th. Debutant Mario Ballotelli gets three chances to add his name to the score sheet but the keeper saves his shots. Tottenham get a chance through Emmanuel Adebayor only for the striker to lift the ball onto the roof of the net. Pochettino:

We need to learn and improve – today was a very tough game for us. I think the first 45 minutes we competed very well and had some good chances. But the key moment came in the second half – it was a very soft penalty. When you are 2-0 down against Liverpool it is very difficult.

We were slow in our pressing and passing early on and gave away a bad goal, but then we upped it.It was a frustrating day but I think it was a combination of Aston Villa defending well and us failing to find that wee bit of quality. We had enough of the ball but could not find the penetration in the final third.
