The manager of Liverpool football club is retires from his post. Shankly, 58, has been in charge at Anfield for nearly 15 years. He made the decision to leave five weeks ago, but club directors have been trying to persuade him to stay.

Strikes for the Reds from Riise and Nunez are to no avail as an own goal from Gerrard is followed up by goals from Drogba and Kezman to give the Blues their third League Cup triumph.
Liverpool 2-2 Cardiff (Liverpool 3-2 on penalties)
Liverpool win their eighth League Cup as they overcome plucky underdogs Cardiff City after another penalty shootout. Skrtel and Kuyt score for the Reds with Mason and Turner replying for the Blues. The penalty shootout is notable as cousins Steven and Anthony Gerrard both miss spotkicks for their respective sides.

Liverpool announces that Suarez, the player involved in the biting incident, is going to Barcelona and has signed a five-year contract with the team.
