Brambilla gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses why he turned his back on Hollywood and went to the art world.

Once I realized the importance of marketing and the importance of everything other than the content itself, I didn’t last very long. I just had a sense that it wasn’t really fulfilling for me creatively and I went back to making things that were more personal and that I was more passionate about. I didn’t feel like it was a filmmaker’s medium anymore in 1993. It was becoming much more of a producer’s medium. Now I would say that it’s not even a producer’s medium anymore, it’s more of a marketing department’s medium. Now the film business has kind of split into these two worlds, very much like the art world.

DiCaprio gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses challenging himself with every film he does.

That really depends on the role. It’s always this grand search in the industry to find good material. Whenever there is good material they all jump on it and it’s like a food fight to get it made. That’s why so many things take years and years to develop because it all shows up on screen. If there are holes in the story structure, if it’s not a compelling, moving narrative, that shows on screen and the movie fails.

James gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses how he has changed over the years.

I hate it when people say you’ve changed, but of course I’ve changed. It’s only growth; it’s not a negative thing. I’ve got two kids, I’ve got responsibilities now, of course I’ve changed. It comes with growth. If you haven’t changed, that’s the problem.

Ulrich gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses the money he made with Metallica and if he has always been interested in art.

I grew up in a household that was pretty rich culturally. In Copenhagen in the late ’60s there was a lot of music, a lot of art, a lot of cultural awareness of what was going on in the world. So I was really very interested in things like Warhol and I remember very early on my parents introduced me to artists like Marc Chagall and different things like that.

Clark gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses the difficulties of taking pictures of skater kids.

Well everybody knows Kids. So there is a calling card that I have there. It’s funny, I was at a skate park once and this fifteen year old came up to me and said, “Do you skate?” And I said, “Well I used to, but I am here with these kids and I am making a film about them. I’m a filmmaker.” He says, “Oh yeah?” And I said, “I made another film called Kids. Have you ever heard of that?” And he said, “Everybody’s heard of that!”

Assche gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses how he knew he wanted to be a fashion designer and what beauty means to him.

I don’t really differentiate beauty according to where it comes from. Making a nice table for a nice dinner is nicer than just eating food out of a plastic plate. It’s always been about that little extra effort that makes all the difference. And I think that’s true in all aspects of life.

Kline gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses advice he would give his younger self about the movie industry.

It’ll sound like I’m joking, but I’m serious: “Don’t listen to any advice from an older artist.” You sort of have to find your own way. The only thing I would say is the thing William Goldman said in his book about Hollywood – nobody knows anything. When you’re young you tend to think they know what they’re doing, but they don’t really know.

Etro gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses why he thinks people are afraid of colors.

The black and everything came with the two World Wars. Look at the Renaissance and how men were dressed – amazing. Look at Venice, I’m thinking of Venice and all the fabrics that came over, that came along from all the journeys. The ladies going crazy in the 17th century. It’s the history of civilization that started to destroy that… You know, industrialization, the wars and everything – the way we live. So it’s really the way we changed our way of life, it’s part of urbanization. Sometimes when I see the tiny cars, the Smart cars driving around in colors, it’s good to see them in the street. But most of the people buy gray, black.

Upton gives an interview to The Talks. She discusses dealing with most of the world calling her a bombshell.

It’s where I’ve started and it’s what I’ve accomplished, so I’m happy about it. But the more my career grows, I think that people will see that I have a lot more to offer and a lot more to give, but I want to do it right and that’s why it’s taking me time. I’m patient about it. Now it’s out of my hands – it has kind of been rolling on its own – but at the beginning I was micromanaging every little step. For example, I felt that my agency before wasn’t helping me in the direction I wanted to go, so I approached IMG myself. I always had in my mind where I should be at a certain stage.

Delpy gives an interview to The Talks. She discusses the kind of movies she hates and scaring off boyfriends.

I think that men maybe feel like they lose their purpose. It is an interesting change in history. It is the first time that women are working, taking care of kids, doing kind of everything. And men should be around, obviously. I think it is really the best thing to have a family and stuff like this. But I think it maybe makes them feel not as needed as they used to be needed in the past and I think it makes some men, not all men, insecure in a certain way. But I am not saying that every man is scared of independent women, just some are.

Timberlake gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses his quarter life crisis and Botox.

It is. From my understanding, they do it so that when they get older it doesn’t look like such a shift. It’s more so that in the future they can hide that they had plastic surgery. They’ll start doing Botox early so that their skin stays tight until they’re 35 and then they’re 40 and then you never question when their skin looks older and then all of a sudden it looks completely different. It’s so that they can hide it more.

Teller gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses how it is difficult to work with his family and why he started taking photos of himself.

I think I got a slightly tired of photographing a lot of celebrities, whether it’s musicians, actors or models. You had to deal with a lot of vanity and I just didn’t want to ask anyone anymore. I thought, “Fuck it, I’m going to photograph myself. I’m not going to look very nice, but no one’s going to tell me what to do.” Also I wanted to feel how it is to be photographed by me!

Schnabel gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses why commercial success doesn’t interest him and whether he prefers film making or painting.

I prefer to paint; I don’t have to translate anything. I don’t have to know if it is good or bad while I am working. I don’t want to think when I am working. Even if I am making a movie, I get to a point where I throw the script away. I know what I want people to do and ultimately it is a spontaneous kind of activity. They need to be able to feel comfortable enough to trust me so they can do something and know I won’t let them get hurt. They end up feeling that way and that is why the movies are good. But I prefer to paint.

Law gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses whether he ever reads interviews and whether he considers acting an art.

It’s certainly a craft. Is it an art? Yeah, in certain ways it is. It depends on the director, it depends on the project, and it depends on the medium. In theater it feels like more of an art form than perhaps on film – in general. But in some films you are required to approach it like an artist and in others you’re about as artistic as the guys who are there to light it or to do the catering.

Rotten gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses whether he fear illness and not taking a step back from the excessive lifestyle.

I haven’t! I’m no Puritan, not by any stretch. I’m quite comfortable doing what I do and I see no need to cease anything. I’m not habitual. I could never be addicted to a substance, because I get bored with doing the same thing over and over. It amazes me when I hear of drug addicts. Don’t they get bored? What next? Done that.

Marr gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses being restless and the role of friendship when being in a band.

The situation when I’ve been in bands has almost been the opposite of what people thought for many years. People think that it was casual or that it was a career move, when in fact, it was 90% based on a belief or a bond with the other band members, a belief that we were on some kind of mission. My relationship with Matt Johnson and my role in The The was as a companion on the mission, really. Same with Isaac Brock and Modest Mouse. I wasn’t sitting outside the building in a limousine on the phone with my manager; I really got in there. Same with The Cribs. So, I have to have a really strong partnership with someone to actually be in the band, otherwise I’d just make a record and then split.

Hurt gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses the industry in the 70’s/80’s and the future.

I think one should be very careful of making things cut and dried or simplistic in that sense. For everything that you find dreadful, there’s usually something that is rather marvelous as well. And where humanity is going to find itself in say 20, 30, 40, or 50 years would be very difficult to predict, I think. There are moments of course when you think that it’s going from bad to worse, but there are other moments when you think that human efforts are really flowering into something really fantastic. It’s not something that can be either dismissed or accepted with any kind of simplicity.

Malkovich gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses why he watches movies and how he has lived a charmed life.

For the most part. My friends, my interests, my curiosities, my reading, the things I like to do. I have a great group of friends around the world who I like and I stay in touch with them okay – maybe not brilliantly, but adequately, probably. I can’t think of anybody who’s had a more charmed life, really.

Eisenberg gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses the best method to save the world, and what he has protested.

I used to protest war in general as a concept, specific wars, future wars, past wars, and I never felt comfortable with it so all my political activity is relegated to writing humor about political stuff. My first play was a kind of satire on young liberals. That is the way I express myself politically because I always felt uncomfortable carrying a sign because you have to hold your hand up all day and the wood can splinter… So I really don’t like protests.

Chastain gives an interview to The Talks. She discusses whether she fear failure and being broke.

What I would do is I would have no money and I’d say, “Okay, I’m going to do this film in four months. I’m going to prepare for this film and I’m not going to take another job.” So I lived completely on credit – not an intelligent way to do it! – while working on the role and then when I got paid I would pay off my credit cards. That was the cycle that I was going through.
