Jesse shows an early knack for business. If the power went out, Biter fixes clocks and other settings on neighbors’ VCRs for $1 apiece. By high school, he has graduated from lawn mowing to his own car detailing business (Biter Car Detailing) and stereo instillation business.
It was a God-given gift. Whenever there was an opportunity to make some money, I would do it. I never knew what I wanted to do in life, but I knew I didn’t want to work for someone else. That was my goal.

There was a college in the middle of Belfast and every week, every week, there’d be an evacuation with a bomb, or else it would actually go off, and it’d just be a matter of fact that you’d be blown out of your desk or you’d be lying on the floor…You sort of grew up hearing of people being maimed and that sort of thing…It’s pretty dark, it’s pretty dark to grow up with…I think that’s why people from Ireland have a really good sense of humor, I think we’re resilient and that’s why I’ll always call it home.

He loved to eat. Holy shit could he eat. Of all of his addictions, and there were many (drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, sex, cars, houses, shiny things), eating was his number one. He never did get a handle on that vice. He could hunker down in front of the TV for hours, nibbling with comma-inducing ferocity the entire time. Nothing in the pantry was safe. He would come up with the most counter-intuitive combinations of food. Like a true alchemist, he’d put salsa on oatmeal, or smother frozen waffles with a can of black beans. He was like a perpetually stoned, pregnant woman. No permutation of ingredients was out of the question; anything was possible. It was a sight to behold.

Jillian Michaels was born in Los Angeles, California to Jo Ann McKarus, a psychotherapist, and Douglas G. McKarus, a personal-injury lawyer. She grew up an only child but has two younger siblings, a brother named George and a half-sister named Lauren. Michaels endured a rough childhood marred by low self-esteem and psychological issues. Her mother put her into therapy when she was 5 for night terrors.
Michaels’ parents divorced when she was 12, after being married for 18 years, causing her to develop anger issues and act out. The breakup took an emotional toll on Michaels, one manifestation of which was weight gain. By the time she was 13, Michaels was 5’2″ and 175 pounds.

Roelof Frederik Botha is born in Pretoria. His parents are Helena Maria van Deventer and Roelof Frederik Botha, Sr, a well-known economist. He is the grandson of Roelof Frederik ‘Pik’ Botha, the South African politician.
In South Africa I grew up in the shadow of a well-known father and grandfather. I had the top results in the province when I finished high school. ‘Botha’s grandson is number 1’ was the headline carried in the local newspaper. Psychologically, I was driven to make my grandfather proud and accomplish something in my own right.
