Annual pass payment plan

Disney announces a monthly payment plan for annual passes. Florida residents can buy an annual pass to Walt Disney World with a down payment equal to the cost of a one-day ticket. The rest of the cost is split up among 12 monthly payments.

What are the benefits of being a Passholder? The list is long but most importantly, you have access to Disney “magic” all year — attractions, characters and events.

International sales center

Disney announces the opening of the first international sales center. The center is located at Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, and it informs guests about the benefits of the Disney Vacation Club and allows them to purchase membership to the club.

The 15,000-square-foot interactive center will give guests a peek at Disney Vacation Club resort hotels as well as other vacation offerings Disney offers. Guests can see for themselves a two-bedroom model of the vacation home accommodations that DVC members and families can expect to find on the island of O’ahu at Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina, Hawai’i.

Adds attraction audio descriptions

Disney parks adds a device that offers audio descriptions, closed captioning and amplified audio for guests with impaired hearing. The audio description describes the visual effects of some of Disney’s most popular attractions.

Audio Description, now available at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, provides narrated audio for guests with visual disabilities by describing visual attraction elements, such as actions, settings and scene changes.

Volunteer reward program

The Disney Parks blog announces the “Give a Day. Get a Disney Day” program. Guests search the Disney Parks website for qualified projects and organizations. After completing their volunteer service, they receive an e-mail with a voucher for free admission to one park in either Disneyland or Walt Disney World. Thomas Smith, the Disney Parks social media director, states:

With this announcement, we’re looking for 1 million people with a passion to make a difference.

If guests are unable to use their free Disney ticket, they can donate it to an approved Disney charity.

Android announced

The Open Handset Alliance, a collection of 34 firms including T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm and Motorola, announces they plan to collaborate with Google to develop Android. They hope it will be the first open platform for mobile phones. Google CEO Eric Schmidt says:

Today’s announcement is more ambitious than any single ‘Google Phone’ that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks. Our vision is that the powerful platform we’re unveiling will power thousands of different phone models.

The FDA announces the approval of Neupro, the first skin patch designed to treat symptoms of early Parkinson’s disease. Neupro patches, which are changed daily, deliver rotigotine through the skin. Rotigotine is a member of a class of drugs called dopamine agonists, which mimic dopamine’s effects.

YouTube Awards

YouTube announces a feature called the YouTube Awards to recognize the best videos uploaded in 2006. Users can vote for their favorite videos and the winners will receive a trophy and recognition for their videos. Jamie Byrne, head of product marketing at YouTube, says it is unclear whether this will be an annual event or not:

Credit crisis to hit financial markets

Celente issues a press release stating the U.S will hit a credit crisis by the end of 2007. Millions Americans who over borrow and take credit or loans will not be able to keep paying their debt causing US financial markets to decline further.

Weighed down with massive loads of debt and locked into jobs that limit opportunities to pay it off, the paycheck to paycheck public will feel the pinch in their
pocket books and businesses will be hit hard in their bottom lines long before recession becomes “official.”

FDA approves Azilect

The FDA approves Azilect (rasagiline), a new molecular entity, for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The drug is a monoamine oxidase type-B (MAO-B) inhibitor that blocks the breakdown of dopamine, a chemical that sends information to the parts of the brain that control movement and coordination. Dr. Steven Galson, Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, says:

This is a welcome development for the more than 50,000 Americans who are each year diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a relentless disease with limited treatment options, and each new therapy is an important addition to the physicians’ treatment options.
