Qatar test Day 3: Third place

Practice Event0 Comments

After crashing on his out lap, Rossi finishes third in the final day of Qatar testing, improving on his fastest time on the first day by nearly half a second to post a best time of 1‘55.429s, o.5s behind the leader, teammate Jorge Lorenzo. Rossi’s combined times for the three days leaves him fifth overall.

In the end I‘m quite happy. Unfortunately I had another crash in the same corner, but it was a small one and I was able with the team to try everything. In the last hour and a half we improved the setting and I had quite a strong pace and did a good time attack. The lap time is not so bad and more importantly I did a race simulation and I was strong. I think that it will be quite tough, because it seems that from the first test the other bikes improved a lot, but now we are there at their level. I think a lot of riders can be fast for the first Grand Prix, but we are competitive…I think the last five laps of the race will be difficult for everybody, but the bike is good to ride, so we‘re able to keep a good pace

Qatar test Day 2: Ninth place

Practice Event0 Comments

Marquez comes ninth in the second day of Qatar training.  On his first run, he improves on the previous day’s time by nearly half a second before crashing without consequences at Turn 1. He re-joins the action and tries various chassis settings on his RC213V. With approximately one hour remaining, he tires a new aerodynamic solution, using a new fairing with winglets. He runs 42 laps with a quickest time of 1’56.046 (Lap 4), 0.610s off the pace of Maverick Viñales.

We have improved the feeling when cornering – the bike turns in a little more – and that has allowed us to lower our times slightly, but we still have some problems exiting corners. The pace we have is good although we are still finding it difficult to get rear grip…In the last run we tested some small winglets and we will have to analyse them well, because we only used them for one four-lap stint, so there will be further research and development. It is only the first prototype.

Qatar test Day 1: 10th place

Practice Event0 Comments

After coming tenth in testing at in Qatar, Marquez says he lost confidence as he struggled to adapt to the Losail circuit’s characteristics.

I already said in Phillip Island that here was really good but now we go to Qatar, a track that we are normally struggling. Definitely we struggle, today quite a lot. We are trying to work on some aspects of the bike to improve. The positive thing is that still two days remain. Also, we are in the circuit where we struggled most during the season. We must look forward and try to improve these areas.  The main problem is mid-corner turning and exit…in Malaysia we were struggling with the electronics but there you can use our potential that is the braking point. You can brake late. Here you can’t because all the corners are quite big and you must float on the bike on the track. We are trying to improve this area.

Qatar test Day 2: Fifth place

Practice Event0 Comments

Rossi comes fifth in testing at Losail, Qatar, with a time of  1m 55.947s. Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales leads with 1m 55.436s.

The second day was OK, I worked a lot and did a lot of laps because we have quite a lot of work to do. In the end my performance was not fantastic in the lap and the position because I‘m a little bit worse compared to yesterday, but in reality we didn‘t do a real time attack because we tried to save some tyres because it‘s important for tomorrow. We don‘t have a lot of tyres, so we’re trying to manage. I think Friday will be very important for trying to understand our potential in a better way and especially for trying to improve the lap time and also for making a long run and try to understand our pace.

Qatar test Day 1: Third place

CrashPractice Event0 Comments

Rossi’s Qatar MotoGP test gets off to a bad start when he falls on his out lap. He recovers and finishes in third place, 0.442s behind Jorge Lorenzo and 0.014s from Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales.

I started in a bad way, because after ten corners I crashed. I wasn’t very fast, but maybe because I had too much angle and the rear slid. But fortunately it was just a small slide at 70 km/h. It wasn’t a big problem but to start like this wasn’t fantastic… After, we jumped on the other bike and I’m quite satisfied about today because, also here in Qatar, it looks like our bike is competitive. We can be strong and fast and this is the most important thing, because it’s already the third track where the Yamaha is competitive. We also started with a good base set-up, in fact I didn’t work a lot on it. I felt good from the first moment, rode quite fast and I was able to consistently improve my lap times and in the end I’m in the third position, so it was a good day.

Signs lifetime deal

Sponsorship Deal0 Comments

Nike signs James to an lifetime endorsement deal. The terms are not revealed, but a source says it easily surpasses Kevin Durant’s 10-year, $300 million deal. Nike has made 13 versions of James’ signature shoe, and annual sales in 2015 for his line are estimated to top $400 million. James:

I’m very humble, man. It’s been an unbelievable time for myself and my family, and I’m just grateful that Nike and [Nike founder] Phil Knight and everyone over there just believed in a skinny-old, skinny 18-year-old kid from Akron, Ohio, and I’m happy to be a part of such a great company…It meant a lot to me even when I signed my first deal just to be with Nike, and it means even more that they’ve given me this.

Nike:

We can confirm that we have agreed to a lifetime relationship with LeBron that provides significant value to our business, brand and shareholders. We have already built a strong LeBron business over the past 12 years, and we see the potential for this to continue to grow throughout his playing career and beyond.

Expects Arsenal fight

Match Report0 Comments

Guardiola says Bayern Munich players to brace themselves for a difficult game against Arsenal:

For them, they have an advantage because they have to win, when that happens with these kind of players, and the history of this club, they are going to make the best performance possible. I don’t expect anything other than a fight for the 90 minutes. We have to look for another way to compete against them because of the enthusiasm they will have, so we will have to be intelligent and control our game. Of course I prefer to come here with six points, but I can imagine my team with zero points and playing in Germany against Arsenal. I can imagine the mentality of my team – we would be an animal, because it is our last chance, you give everything and that will happen with Arsenal, so you have to be prepared.

Must also attack against Bayern

Match Report0 Comments

Wenger believes playing too defensively against Bayern could prove fatal.

I would sign today to take a point but to sit off Bayern. But with their offensive quality, that would be difficult to maintain for 90 minutes. We have to relieve the pressure whenever we can and try to score goals. That is the structure of our team, to attack. If you get our players only to defend then I do not think we will be so efficient. We have to play every time we can.

He also says the team has ‘stabilized’

[The victory against Swansea City] was impressive because if you look at our away results since the start of the season, we have won at Crystal Palace and Watford, at Newcastle and at Swansea. So it looks like the team has stabilised and is growing as a unit. So let’s grow even more. We are certainly more stable defensively but that is from the start of January. If you look at the points we have taken from January 1, we have taken more points than anyone else.

Three point penalty

Penalty1 Comments

Following a post-race investigation, Rossi is given three penalty points and will start the final race of the season from the back of the grid after kicking Marquez off his bike during the Malaysian Grand Prix. MotoGP race director Webb:

It’s irresponsible riding causing a crash and for that we have imposed three penalties points on Rossi.

Rossi now leads Lorenzo by just seven points in the championship. Rossi:

Unfortunately, I lose a lot of time with Marc. And in turn 14, I tried to go a bit wide to take a better line and make him slow. He came to me and I think he crashed in that moment. His handlebar touched my foot and my foot slipped off, a bike can’t crash only with a touch. He has won his fight, he made me lose the championship.

Yamaha have said they will appeal against the sanction.

Marquez, Rossi clash

Crash1 Comments

After being overtaken by Marquez in the 13th lap of the Sepang GP, Rossi runs Marquez wide and when Marquez’s Honda gets too close, Rossi pushes his leg against the bike. Marquez falls off his bike and is forced to retire. Rossi continues and finishes in third place. The race is won by Jorge Lorenzo. Marquez:

We were having a good race up until the incident – we started a fight between us and I always passed without making contact with him. At Turn 14 he passed me on the inside and I saw him looking at me. I didn’t know what to do. Then he kicked out at me, knocking my brake lever, and I crashed. Both what Valentino said to race direction and what he did on the track has made me disappointed. I’ve never seen anything like it: a rider kicking another rider.

England 2-0 Switzerland

Match Report0 Comments

England beat Switzerland in the European Championship Qualifiers. Kane scores in 67 minutes. Skipper Rooney scores a penalty with six minutes to go, breaking Bobby’s Charlton’s record with 50 goals in 107 matches. Manager Hodgson:

I wasn’t at all satisfied with the first half. But Wayne is the story of the night. I’m still happy too that despite not playing anywhere near our best we were still able to win the game against a good team. We are so delighted for Wayne. We made a small presentation in the dressing room to Wayne, a football shirt with 50 on the back. He gave a very good speech in accepting that. I don’t think Sir Bobby Charlton will be too disappointed.

Serena beats sister in U.S. Open

Match Report0 Comments

Serena wins the U.S. Open quarterfinal against her sister Venus. 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Serena is 16-11 in their all-in-the-family matches, including 9-5 in majors and 3-2 at the U.S. Open. Serena:

Obviously we are very, very tough competitors on the court, but once the match is over, the second it’s done, you know, we’re sisters, we’re roommates, and we’re all that.

Coach Mouratoglou:

They both played their best. If they were feeling uncomfortable with playing each other, they could not play at that level.

‘The perfect day’

Personal Best0 Comments

Broad comments on his career best performance which led to the Australian Cricket Team being bowled out for 60 before lunch on the first day of their test match against England:

Without doubt that is the best day’s cricket I’ve been a part of. To have a 214-run lead after day one is probably as powerful a performance as I’ve ever seen and certainly been involved in. It was just one of those days that you dream of, home ground, picking up 300 Test wickets and then a career best. It’s been the perfect day for us, but we start again on day two.

Of his own performance:

It has not really sunk in. I see the scoreboard on the ground and it doesn’t seem real, it was a bit of a freak day really, but it is what you work hard for and what you train for.
