Piombo discusses his experience with the Scottish clothing mills:
At first, [the old Scottish mills] didn’t want to know when I went to them — they were more interested in making lighter commercial cloths that were kind of boring. But eventually they fished out their old archive books and they were amazing. Much of the old ways of weaving (which still, miraculously, hang by a thread) were done by single weavers working in their own crofts. This, for Massimo, was — and remains — a virtue.

(Laughs) Yeah… It depends who you’re talking to. Some people ask really interesting questions and they make you think about your work, and sometimes yourself, in a new way. They make you articulate things that maybe you’ve never articulated before. They make you realize things that you maybe haven’t realized before about yourself or a project or the way you work. A lot of it is just hard labor in the mines of marketing, a lot of it is, but it’s an incredibly important tool.

Carter says there is a trend of artists making their music widely available to listen to, rather than putting all the effort into making people buy it.
What we’re looking to do is not just about selling the CD or the digital file. It’s how many people can we get the music to. How many people can experience it? If it was up to me, I’d give away the next album and put it on every handset that I can put it on, to get that scale,. You can’t be scared to fail. Sometimes we’re going to get big results, and sometimes you learn a lesson, make an adjustment and move on.
On how an artist like Gaga would use data-crunching features on Facebook.
For us it’s how do we laser-focus on that, how do we make it less passive, how do we focus on the super-fan as opposed to somebody who just liked one single? The more layers on top of the community, the more sticky it is. For us it’s not about Lady Gaga talking to the community, but it’s about the community sharing with each other.
On mobile extending the concert experience:
People watch concerts like this now [holds up imaginary mobile phone]. For us, it’s how do we extend that experience? Right now it’s very simple: people are tweeting from the concert, they’re uploading their YouTube video…In the next year or so, something we’re working on internally is going to make it a much more interactive experience… not just how you share the experience on the outside of the concerts, when you go home, but how you share it on the inside of the concerts too.

I hate it when people say you’ve changed, but of course I’ve changed. It’s only growth; it’s not a negative thing. I’ve got two kids, I’ve got responsibilities now, of course I’ve changed. It comes with growth. If you haven’t changed, that’s the problem.

Just being undisciplined, having stupid penalties, turning the football over in critical situations, so the bottom line is we talked about it a lot. Obviously our players understand it. In the heat of the game things are going to happen, but you have to understand what it takes to win. I guess by losing some of those close ones you find out what it takes.
