170 held on $1m bond each

Around 170 motorcycle gang members are charged with engaging in organized crime in connection to the shootings, which are now considered a capital murder case “because of the number of people killed in one episode.” The gang members are each being held on $1 million bonds. Police:

That’s a pretty severe charge — engaging in organized crime in reference to nine individuals killed. It doesn’t get much more significant than that. There may be warrants on individuals that may be attached to that as well, but that’s a pretty serious charge…I can tell you that yesterday’s events started as bad guys on bad guys,” said Swanton. “When our officers got there and intervened in the active-shooter situation, those bad guys turned their hostility on our officers, which included Waco and DPS.

Some 50 weapons — including knives, brass knuckles, chains and clubs — have been recovered from the scene so far. Police:

These were bad-guy weapons. They ranged from brass knucks to knives to chains to clubs and to firearms. This was a true gang fight…What I want you all to understand: This is not a bunch of doctors and dentists and lawyers riding Harleys. These are criminals on Harley-Davidsons that are members of a criminal biker gang, and we know who they are. We know which clubs that they’re with.

Slager is indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge in connection with the April shooting death Scott. Under South Carolina law, there is only a single murder charge, which was described by the prosecutor as an “unlawful killing with malice aforethought”.

As long as malice is proven in the heart and mind, the state has proven its case.

Slager’s attorney:

The grand jury is a formal step, but just another step in the criminal process. Until we have an opportunity to fully evaluate the state’s case and to compare it with our own investigation, we will not be commenting on any aspect of the case.

Scott’s family:

We are happy and pleased about that right now.

Attempted second-degree murder charge

Apperson’s charges are upgraded to attempted second-degree murder. Apperson is also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault with a firearm. State Attorney:

Our law enforcement community and the State Attorney’s Office works vigorously to ensure people may travel our busy streets, going about their business, without fear. Every resident and visitor to Seminole County deserves this freedom.

Apperson’s lawyer:

My reaction to these charges is a pronounced shrug. I’ve reviewed the charges and they don’t change the facts. The prosecutors have put their heads together and tried to contemplate what could be the most serious charges, but that doesn’t really change anything. This is a case of self-defense.

Under CBI investigation

Many top bureaucrats in the state of Madhya Pradesh are now under CBI investigation with regard to the transport constable recruitment examination conducted by Vyapam. This test was deemed unique as transport department officials allegedly adopted administrative measures to arbitrarily change rules and procedures to help those candidates who were not eligible. Sources claimed that the first notification for the exam was for recruiting 198 personnel, but 332 people were selected without due administrative sanction. When the Opposition raised the issue, transport minister Bhupendra Singh held a press conference claiming 316 people were selected. The Congress has alleged that incriminating documents related to the exam were made to go missing. The party added that the case was hushed by the STF, which is why the case was registered late. 38 persons have been named as accused in this case.

This is the most explosive of all Vyapam cases and the officers role was under scanner from the beginning, but the STF was never interested in pursuing the case.

Tensing is charged by grand jury indicted with murder and voluntary manslaughter. If convicted, Tensing faces a sentence of at least 15 years and as much as life in prison on the murder charge and as much as 11 years on the manslaughter charge. Prosecutor Deters said he would seek life in prison for Tensing:

Can you imagine the outrage you would have if this was your kid, or this was your brother? This guy didn’t deserve to be tased, and he certainly didn’t deserve to be shot in the head. This is the most asinine act I’ve ever seen a police officer make. It was unwarranted. It’s an absolute tragedy that, in the year 2015, anyone would behave in this manner…He wasn’t dealing with someone who was wanted for murder. He was dealing for someone who was wanted for not having a front license plate.
