Walter Scott funeral

Funeral0 Comments

Hundreds of mourners attend the funeral of Scott at W.O.R.D. Ministries Christian Center. With the 200 seat sanctuary full, 100 more attendees stand outside in the rain.  Soloist Brian McClain sings a gospel selection, and the pastor George Hamilton delivers the sermon. On the death of Scott, he says:

There is no doubt in my mind that Walter’s death was motivated by racism. You have to hate somebody to shoot them from behind. This hate could not have been because of the person who Walter was. This hate was because Walter was an African American.

South Carolina congressman Clyburn addresses the press after the funeral:

I think this is a catalyst to get people to face up to the fact that we’ve got problems in this country. I think this exposed something that is already there.

The best lesson I learned from joining a board

Writes Article0 Comments

In an article for Fortune, De Baubigny talks about the personal impact of becoming a board member of Bono and Bobby Shriver’s Product RED initiative:

Joining a board also shaped me as a professional in more ways than I could imagine. It tested first-hand everything that I was advising our entrepreneurs to do as they built their companies: achieve the impossible on a limited budget, hire the best (one of the best hires I have ever made was bringing in Deborah Dugan to run RED), navigate choppy regulatory waters, reshape the business model against a changing economy, and develop long-term partners. At the same time, I had the privilege of watching a team and board come together to do something truly impactful: get medicine to those who need it and, ultimately, save lives. This “night job” taught me passion, tested my skills, and pushed me to grow–all skills from which KPCB was able to benefit tremendously. Joining a board (profit or not for profit) develops all the skills above, plus time management in order not to detract from your day job. It has been an incredible learning experience and has truly inspired me.

Slager kills Scott

Death0 Comments

Santana is walking to the barbershop where he works, when he sees Officer Slager chasing Scott on foot and starts to record the incident on his cell phone as they enter a deserted area. He hears a Taser gun go off and sees Scott running away from Slager. The video shows Officer Slager draw his weapon, and as Scott turns and begins to run away, Slager fires his weapon eight times towards Scott’s back as he flees. Slager then walks over to Scott who lies motionless in the grass, and places handcuffs on his wrists, behind his back. Another officer then arrives on the scene. Scott is later pronounced dead. Santana says that Scott did not reach out to grab Taser, as the police officer originally stated.

Police tell Santana to stay where he was, he said. But he flees, out of fear for what he had seen, what he had done and what might happen to him. He is shocked when a client mentioned later that day that there was a commotion near the shop and that a man had been killed by police. Santana had not realized that the man he saw being shot had died.

Go-Fund Me account raises over $40,000

Donation0 Comments

A GoFundMe page called “Support Memories Pizza” set up to raise $35,000 for the restaurant gets $40,000 from more than 1,000 donors in five hours. The Gofundme page donations are now over $300,000.

After being interviewed by Dana Loesch on her television show on Blaze TV, we learned that the family may never even reopen the doors to their restaurant as the death threats and vicious online reviews continue to pour in from the arbiters of “tolerance.” My name is Lawrence Jones, and I’m one of the television opinion contributors on Dana’s show. Before the televised interview the producers discussed the situation…We all agreed: this family needs help to get through this assault. So we set up a GoFundMe page with the modest goal of $25,000. The intent was to help the family stave off the burdensome cost of having the media parked out front, activists tearing them down, and no customers coming in.

Palestinian door sold for $175

Sale/Purchase2 Comments

Rabea Darduna, a father of six from northern Gaza, is upset when he finds out that the Greek goddess Niobe painting he sold to Khaled for 700 shekels ($175) is worth much more. He says he was approached by a group of men:

They said they wanted to put it in a museum in Gaza where everyone could see it. One man told me: ‘We’re from the group that did it.’ They made me sign a paper. It said I agreed on 700 shekels. They pressured me and I accepted because I need the money…I had no idea what the value of the painting was or who this Banksy is…Really we feel depressed and very upset. This door is rightfully ours. They cheated us. It’s a matter of fraud. And we’re asking for the door to be returned.

Khaled says he has followed Banksy’s work for years, will not give it back to Darduna, and has no plans to sell it at present:

I bought the door to preserve the painting and protect it from being removed, spoiled or destroyed.
