Aaron Swartz commits suicide age 26
Swartz body is found by his girlfriend at his home in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn at around 9.30am. He was 26. Swartz’ attorney confirms in an email to The Tech blog.

He left no suicide note. Swartz’s mother writes on Hacker News:
Aaron has been depressed about his case/upcoming trial, but we had no idea what he was going through was this painful. Aaron was a terrific young man. He contributed a lot to the world in his short life and I regret the loss of all the things he had yet to accomplish. As you can imagine, we all miss him dearly. The grief is unfathomable.

The Wind Rises
Miyazaki’s final movie, The Wind Rises, is released to mixed reviews due to its controversial subject matter– Japan’s role in World War II. The movie tells the fictionalized tale of Jiro Korikoshi, the engineer behind Japan’s most successful fighter planes during the war.
Jiro Horikoshi was the most gifted man of his time in Japan. He wasn’t thinking about weapons – really all he desired was to make exquisite planes.

After weeks on the run and days in immigration detention, McAfee arrives in Miami, where he is staying at the Beacon Hotel. McAfee tells CNN he and his girlfriend were separated when immigration authorities expelled him from Guatemala.
I’m happy to be going home. I’ve been running through jungles and rivers and oceans and I think I need to rest for a while. And I’ve been in jail for seven days. I’m just going to hang in Miami for a while. I like Miami. There is a great sushi place there and I really like sushi.

Deschanel, Gibbard divorce
Deschanel finalizes divorce from Ben Gibbard after roughly three years of marriage. The divorce papers were filed by the actress in December 2011 in a Los Angeles court, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the cause of the dissolution. On relationships:

$75,000 cancer donation
Sheen donates $75,000.00 to a police officer with a 10 year old daughter who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The donation is placed in a family fund to help pay for their incurred expenses.
No parent should have to watch their kid go through that.
Denied asylum, hospitalized
McAfee says he suffered chest pains overnight and is hospitalized briefly after being denied political asylum in Guatemala. McAfee says he does not believe that he suffered a heart attack, and a doctor agrees that his heart rhythm and blood pressure are normal and that he appears to be suffering from high stress. Shortly after the decision to deny him asylum is announced, McAfee issues a plea on his blog for the public to petition Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina to let him stay.
Please email the President of Guatemala and beg him to allow the court system to proceed, to determine my status in Guatemala, and please support the political asylum that I am asking for.
McAfee’s legal team said they are preparing to appeal the denial of asylum to the country’s constitutional court, a process that could give McAfee perhaps another day or two in Guatemala. The court would have to issue a decision within 48 hours. Later, he is released from the hospital and taken back to the detention center.

I had read a story in The New York Times about a particularly horrific abuse case involving some two hundred deaf boys who had been abused by a priest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What made the story stand out for me were the documents that were revealed as part of the investigation which led straight to the Vatican – not only to the Vatican, but to Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict. That seemed to me a story that hadn’t been told yet.
