WinterIsComing interview

Nairn says in an interview with WinterIsComing.net that his first musical passion was glam and thrash metal such as Poison, Sepultura, Obituary, The Cult and Danzig. He modeled his guitar playing skills after Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and others, and says that his DJing influences are ‘anything that creates an emotional reaction’:

At a gig recently in Pensacola Florida, as I was standing looking over the crowd, it dawned on me that it feels like I’m shooting emotional laser beams out into the crowd. When they respond, it’s the most amazing feeling, and conversely, when a crowd doesn’t get it, it can be like “WHY DONT YOU GET WHAT I’M GETTING?!” We all have gigs like that though, but thankfully more of the former.

His World of Warcraft character is a ‘green goblin hunter with a spectral pet called Jupiter or Hannibal’:

I’m currently on Thrall U.S. [WoW server], on the Horde side!

However the comment that generates the most interest is when he appears to come out about his gay identity. Asked if he is aware of his following in the gay ‘bear’ community:

Well, in all honesty, when you talk about “the gay community,” you are talking about MY community, haha. I AM aware of it yeah, and I think it’s really lovely. There’s not a day that I don’t get a few messages, but 99% or more are super sweet and nothing smutty at all! Again, it’s a privilege, and I really mean that. I’ve never hidden my sexuality from anyone, my whole life in fact, and I’ve been waiting for someone to ask about it in an interview, cos it’s not something you just blurt out. I’ve tried to lead the questions a few times, to no avail!

Wired profile

Wired profiles Gouw and Fonstad. Gow describes how, when working as Accel, she felt excluded from certain networking opportunities because she was a woman, and she would use a secret code on her calendar to conceal when she was going to a women’s networking event. That changed when Sheryl Sandberg’s book Lean In came outand word spread that the Facebook COO had been conducting all-female salons at her house. Accel’s partners started asking Gouw to target specific women when she attended female networking events. She says her participation in women’s gatherings was now seen as an asset, and she stopped using secret codes on her calendar.

It was literally a 180.

Fonstad tells the story of an all-male engineering team she knew that was developing a hardware prototype. When they showed it to a newly hired female engineer they saw that her longer nails rendered it impossible to use, and the team ended up completely redoing the user interface. Gouw:

These companies are creating technologies that didn’t exist before — business models that didn’t exist before — and going after whole new markets. They’re dealing with complicated decisions and strategies that have no prior art. [With a diverse range of people around the table] you’re going to get a more 360-degree view on the business.

Launch Festival interview

Graham is interviewed by Calacanis at Launch Festival 2014, and talks about his decision to hand over the running of the accelerator to Sam Altman.

Y Combinator’s gonna have to grow. We grow as the number of startups grows and the number of startups has been growing. You saw how it started up – it was in my kitchen. Now it’s got 10 full-time partners…maybe 20 people. 632 startups we funded. It’s turned into this giant thing.  I’m no good at running this giant thing. Sam, however, is going to be good at running a giant thing.

Rapaport speaks about playing the role of Daryl Crowe Jr. in the television show Justified:

I knew he was going to be a bad guy. I was familiar with the show, but I didn’t have an outline for the season, or the arc. But I knew the pedigree of the show and the writing. They’ve brought in a lot of good actors over the years. I try to make him as true as possible, his point of view to be understood as much as possible. His whole agenda is to take care of his family. It just doesn’t always seem that way.

He said basically, that I could do better. I just needed to figure out a way to be as effective as a Marvin Gaye. Somebody who is able to be masculine and still represent music that crossed for women and men. I think I was able to do that with ‘The Man.

And then I was wearing like a tie-dye Guns And Roses shirt. They were like are you interested in being a model? And my mother and I looked at each other like, “What”?

The Talks interview

Libeskind gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses whether he would ever design a church, his confidence, and his favorite building.

I was just in Paris and one of the buildings I always think about is the Eiffel Tower. When it was first built, all the great writers like Baudelaire, Dumas, Maupassant, all the great musicians like Gounod, and all the great philosophers wrote a petition against it to tear it down. They said, “We hate this building! It is marring the beauty of Paris.” And yet it is the most fantastic building because it has no real function, it has no apparent origin, but it created the idea of Paris itself. To me that is one of the symbols of greatness: a building that at the beginning nobody liked, that everybody thought was a folly, and yet in the long run it created the entire mythology of one of the great cities of the world.

Johnson gives his thoughts on becoming the first African American to win a singles title in WWE

That was a great achievement becoming the first African American Intercontinental Champion in history. That was a great honour but it was short lived and it quickly became disgraced, someone had scratched some racial words, Congratulation Ni**er, into my car and the treatment I got was pretty bad. I hadn’t experienced any racism in wrestling until I made it to the big leagues, the WWF.

Kodaline interview

Seacrest interviews Kodaline during On Line With Ryan Seacrest and questions them about their collaboration with Harry Styles.

We played a show in LA and Harry Styles just turned up and said he was a big fan and had been listening to our music like all the time and we expected him to have like body guards but he’s just a really cool down to earth guy.

Adam Lambert interview

Seacrest interviews Lambert during On Air With Ryan Seacrest and questions him about his tour with Queen.

I was talking to the Queen guys about this today when I first met them and the first couple times we took the stage together, it was good, it felt good, but just last year at the iHeartRadio Festival it just felt more grounded and evolved and we talked about a lot of reasons, but I feel more grounded.

ArkTimes.com interview

Rollins speaks to ArkTimes.com about  indy wrestling and wrestling being called “fake”.

Fake is like the worst word you could possibly use to describe anything, you know? What are you talking about? What is fake? It’s a television show, and a live performance. Nothing’s fake about it. We’re not telling you we’re out their fighting each other. We’re going out there to entertain you. I consider myself an athlete.

The Democrat Tribune interview

Ziggler talks to The Democrat Tribune about motivation and character development.

There are days when you don’t feel good, you may be a little banged up or you’ve had 10 flight delays in the same day. If I was a fan sitting in the audience, I’d be disappointed if a top star didn’t wrestle.

Sarah Jessica Parker interview

Seacrest interviews Parker during On Air With Ryan Sacrest and questions her about where she got her fashion sense.

I grew up with a mother who had great appreciation for beautiful things. We could afford almost nothing, but she was very industrious and clever. We were always like the poorest family in the nicest neighborhood and we would go to church tag sales and buy things for like a dollar, so we had really lovely things, but they didn’t come to us in the typical way.

The Room interview

Aries talks to The Room radio show about booking in TNA and the current state of the company.

I think TNA’s fine. I think people get a little wrapped up in the day-to-day operations, per se. They like to maybe read into things without really having the knowledge of everything that’s going on behind the scenes. … My paychecks are coming. I’m working consistently … There’s a lot of good things on the horizon.

Jeff Lewis interview

Williams interviews Lewis and questions him about his boyfriend, future plans, reality TV, and his design show Flipping Out.

Well the first thing I do when I go into people’s houses is I edit. So you’d be surprised at how much stuff you collect, so I go through and I move things around from room to room. Of course easy things, pillow, throws, books I do a lot with books. That is like the designers trick. Even something like changing out a lamp. Rugs, and I do not spend a lot of money on rugs. It just, it makes no sense every time I have spent money on a rug a dog has thrown up on it. And then I wanted to kill my self because I have spent a lot of money on rugs, so I do not do that. If you keep it inexpensive you can switch it, you know. like a sweater.

Genius Of Startup interview

Liu interviews Corcoran and Medved at the 92nd Street Y about great business ideas. Medved:

Many people get this idea that it’s all about the idea…and that’s completely wrong. The first thing you have to do is you have to develop the idea. Even before you start building, you have to convince other people that it’s a great idea.

Corcoran:

I don’t really pay much attention to the idea at all. If it’s common sense and it’s plausible, that’s fine…I’m hyperfocused on the entrepreneur. I’m trying to pick out the right people
