Headlines Coachella

Madonna kisses DrakeDrake performs and closes at Coachella in his first performance as headliner of the three day festival. At 10:40, he opens his set with a monologue, while he smokes and drinks onstage. Madonna also makes an appearance, as she walks over and kisses him on the mouth. For more than an hour, he performs some of his biggest hits on the main stage. Drake ends the show:

I really enjoy writing with Justin. We had psychoanalytic sessions whenever we wrote songs first. We’d sit down and we’d start talking about situations. And then we’d start talking about issues or problems or relationships with people. That was the only way, because you know, writing together with somebody is very intimate. That was fun, because he’s open and he’s got talent. He’s a songwriter. I haven’t worked with a lot of songwriters where I’m instantly connected and start riffing and playing with the rhythm of the words. He’s as interested in the rhythm of the words as the meaning of the words.

Different things inspire me to write. I could be having a guitar lesson and something will just come to me. Or Mirwais will send me over music – rough stuff that doesn’t have an arrangement basic chord progressions. American Life came about itself like that. The music has to jar my brain in terms of lyrics. Sometimes I write free verse. I have a journal and I note down ideas I get from newspapers and books.

I felt like, ‘Why didn’t somebody tell me? Why didn’t somebody warn me?’ And that’s also what that song is about – swallowing that bitter pill. It was a combination of that, and also just feeling incredibly vulnerable that inspired the song.

In the time leading up to Ray of Light, I was in a quiet space – making lots of discoveries and going through lots of changes. It was an introspective, questioning time. Then, almost without warning, I felt like I needed to explode. I didn’t feel the need to be so introspective. I felt like dancing. And that’s reflected in these songs.
