Promising Ebola drug

An experimental antiviral drug, called favipiravir, is still in early stages in West Africa, and too few people have been treated to really know whether the drug helps shows some promise in the fight against Ebola in West Africa. It is only effective, however, if patients get it early. The survival rate of 85% in the ones who have received it is encouraging. European Commission for Research Moedas:

If these results are confirmed by the ongoing clinical trial, it will be the first-ever treatment to be deployed against this deadly disease during the current outbreak.

Kidnapped

Sortor is suspected to have been kidnapped for ransom while doing missionary work in central Nigeria. Kogi state police spokesman:

[The kidnappers were…] unknown gunmen…(who) came into the school premises shooting sporadically to scare away people before taking (the hostage) away into the bush. We are hopeful of finding her. Our suspicion is that she was picked up for ransom.

Defends Obama

In an interview with Couric, Axelrod speaks out against Rudy Giuliani, who has implied that Obama doesn’t love America.

I don’t know anybody who has…a deeper feeling about this country than the President. And I don’t know anybody who’s expressed it more eloquently over a long period of time. So I really wrote it off to, frankly, a fading politician trying to light himself on fire and make himself relevant.

Explains Oscar name flub

On Jimmy Kimmel Live’s post Oscar show, Travolta finally explains the reason for flubbing Idina Menzel’s name at the 2014 Oscars. His excuses: he ran into Goldie Hawn backstage which got him off track, the prompter put the name onscreen in a phonetic form, and his 15 minutes to speak became one minute and 15 seconds.

She’s had one of the best years of her career, and she gives me credit!

Travolta also acknowledged his awkward reunion with Menzel at this year’s Oscars:

Moore plays Alice Howland, a professor of linguistics who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in this drama written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. The film is based upon Lisa Genova’s novel of the same name. Co-starring Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, and Hunter Par. Sandly Oltz, who had been diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s at age 47, gave tips from her own life about how to cope with the disease:

[Moore] would just ask questions like, ‘What does it feel like to have Alzheimer’s?’ I would say, ‘Well, it’s like all these words [are here] and you can’t find the right one.’

Files lawsuits against landowners

Dominion is filing lawsuits against 47 landowners in both Augusta and Nelson County for not allowing them access to their properties. The Littles of Western Augusta County, Virginia are just one family of five opposed to the pipeline entering their property and they have lawsuits pending in federal court to challenge the constitutionality of the law. Little said a representative of Dominion Transmission came to survey the property and she refused.

A river ferry sinks after being hit by a cargo vessel in Bangladesh. The ferry held up to 140 passengers, killing at least 48. It is undetermined how many passengers might still be missing. Survivor:

Meningitis outbreak

The death of a University of Oregon student is found to be related to a bacterial infection form of meningitis. An 18-year-old is found in her room unconscious is later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. She is the fourth case at this particular university. The other three students are recovering. The university announces a full-scale vaccination program the first week in March.

The victim in Kansas, described as a man in his 50s, had been bitten by ticks multiple times in the days before falling ill.

Eight healthcare workers are being sent home due to Ebola exposure from S.D. Cooper Hospital in Monrovia. They will be under heavy observation for 21 days. This number still remains far lower than last year when the West African nation had the worst outbreak in history. To this date, Liberia reports 3,900 Ebola deaths according to the World Health Organization. Assistant Health Minister for the country, Nyenswah states:

You cannot be under observation and then at the same time go to work to expose people. No way.
