John Russell Houser kills self age 59
After firing 13 rounds, Houser leaves the theater through a side door and heads toward his car, a 1995 Lincoln. On seeing a police cruiser arrive in the parking lot he reloads his handgun, re-enters the theater and fires three more rounds, then he fatally shoots himself in the head.

Five shot, four dead in murder-suicide
Five people are shot and four are dead with one critically wounded in Suwanee, GA. Three, and adult male and two children under the age of ten, are found dead at the scene. An adult woman dies either on her way to the hospital or at the hospital from a gunshot wound to her back. An older man remains in critical condition and is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities have not identified a motive. Sheriff:
We have absolutely no clue at this point what precipitated it. We hope to find a motive during the ongoing investigation.
Tensing kills Dubose at traffic stop
Tensing, a University of Cincinnati police officer is under investigation after Dubose is shot in the head and killed during a routine traffic stop. After Tensing stops Dubose’s car for not having a front license plate, Dubose refuses to provide a driver’s license, produces an alcohol bottle instead and refuses to get out. A struggle ensues, Tensing fires one shot and is knocked to the ground.
Tom Moore dies at 86
Moore dies age 86. The cause of death is lung cancer. Archie Comics:

Sells house for $26 million
Spielberg sells his Malibu mansion for $26 million. The house is sold in an off-market deal and not in the multiple listing service. The house features seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms, formal living and dining rooms, a massage room and a home theater. Outside the house are a swimming pool and spa, and a two-bedroom guesthouse. Spielberg bought the property in two separate transactions in 1989 and 2000, paying a total of $6.575 million. When Spielberg and his family were not at home, he rented the property during the summer for $125,000 a month.
Troy Goode dies age 30
Police arrest Goode due to his erratic actions at a concert in Southaven, Mississippi. The police say he was on LSD. He is placed face-down on a stretcher with his arms and legs bound during the arrest, before he was placed in the back of an ambulance. He tells officers he is having trouble breathing in this position. Bystanders are threatened with arrest for filming the incident. Witness:
Paramedics arrive on scene, and I see them put him in a four-point restraint or hogtie, I don’t know how else to describe it. His legs one over the other, and hands in back, by my vantage point, on at least one of his legs…He looked to me like he was struggling or convulsing or both. He appeared to be in distress to me.
Good dies two hours later. Goode’s family attorney says his actions were peaceful, and call for an official investigation. The family not yet calling for criminal charges against the officers:
The use of force was unnecessary. Troy was not a threat to anyone. We are calling for an investigation by the Mississippi attorney general and we’ll have to wait for the autopsy report to determine cause of death to decide exactly what action should be taken, he said
The victim’s wife says police said they would arrest her if she tried to visit her husband in hospital. Family members learn the news of death by hospital phone call. Attorney:
No mother and no wife should be prevented from doing that. They are obviously distraught. They didn’t know … what Troy’s condition was, they didn’t know if he was going to be OK.
Announces $100 million for alien life search
Hawking and Milner announce they are putting $100 million into Breakthrough Listen, a project to search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. Hawking:
We believe that life arose spontaneously on Earth. So in an infinite universe, there must be other occurrences of life.
Milner, who is funding the project, says scientists will be able to collect as much data on SETI in a day as they now do in a year, and all data will be made public. The project will also work on improving the best way to send a message out into space. Milner:
I’ve been thinking about this since I was a child, reading Carl Sagan’s book Intelligent Life in the Universe, The year that I was born, 1961, that was a big year in science — the first man was launched into space [Yuri Gagarin], and I was named for him. And Kennedy made his famous speech about putting man on the moon…I don’t have high expectations, but the search itself will teach us quite a bit. We could find something we’re not even looking for…Irrespective of what the answer is, it’s a powerful answer. At any given time, we should apply the best technology and use the best instruments available to search for that answer.
To appear as Guest Shark
Carter will appear as a Guest Shark on ABC’s Shark Tank, taking the place of Kevin O’Leary on one show. The season, which premieres on September 25, will also have Chris Sacca and Ashton Kutcher as Guest Sharks. Carter says he is excited to join because of the show’s ability to reach Americans outside the Bay Area and New York hubs, “specifically kids that look like me” from less privileged or minority backgrounds.

‘I don’t need to be lectured’
In an article for USA Today, Trump says that his words on McCain have been distorted by the media, and criticizes McCain and Sanders for “covering up” the Veterans Affairs Scandal:
Thanks to McCain and his Senate colleague Bernie Sanders, their legislation to cover up the VA scandal, in which 1,000+ veterans died waiting for medical care, made sure no one has been punished, charged, jailed, fined or held responsible. McCain has abandoned our veterans. I will fight for them. The reality is that John McCain the politician has made America less safe, sent our brave soldiers into wrong-headed foreign adventures, covered up for President Obama with the VA scandal and has spent most of his time in the Senate pushing amnesty. He would rather protect the Iraqi border than Arizona’s. He even voted for the Iran Nuclear Review Act of 2015, which allows Obama, who McCain lost to in a record defeat, to push his dangerous Iran nuclear agreement through the Senate without a supermajority of votes.
A number of my competitors for the Republican nomination have no business running for president. I do not need to be lectured by any of them. Many are failed politicians or people who would be unable to succeed in the private sector. Some, however, I have great respect for.
He also says that he was as co-chairman of the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission, which built a Veterans memorial, and that he financed and served as the grand marshal of the 1995 Nation’s Day Parade, which honored over 25,000 veterans.
Man drowns in pool
The body of Edenilson Steven Valle is found in Moore’s swimming pool in her Los Angeles home. Moore is away at the time. One police officer indicates that the deceased may be one of Moore’s staff members. Valle’s family tell investigators he could not swim. It is thought he may have fallen into the pool during a party. Moore:
[This is] an unthinkable tragedy, and my heart goes out to this young man’s family and friends.
