Barney’s Version

Pike plays Miriam Grant-Panofsky in Richard J. Lewis’s adaptation of Mordechai Richler’s comedy-drama novel. She is forced to deal with a her husband’s infidelity and a marriage breakdown, and ultimately his descent into dementia. Paul Giamatti, Minnie Driver, Rachelle Lefevre, Scott Speedman, and Dustin Hoffman co-star.

It’s a crazy look at one man’s life well lived, through three marriages, two children, the death of a father, a murder mystery, craziness, fast-living women … and a look at an endearing antihero.

Moses hooks up with a Sarah, a customer service rep played by Mary-Louise Parker, and they spend the rest of the movie on the run from a pack of killers, seeking help from three of Moses’ former colleagues.

It’s a dangerous thing. Because when you’re having fun on the set, it doesn’t always translate into the fun it’s supposed to be…Robert Schwanker did a great job. He really wove it all together.

Made In Dagenham

Pike appears in the historical drama directed by Nigel Cole. Her character, Lisa, joins the 1968 walkout by sewing machinists at the Ford Dagenham plant over equal pay. Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, and Geraldine James co-star.

It was quite a small thing, as opposed to a nationwide movement. This small group wanted to change things but didn’t really want to see fame and attention from it. I saw one of the women being interviewed and she said that people kept coming up to them at the time saying: “Well done!” But they felt really embarrassed. So, I don’t know… But I like how it started off as a very simple grievance – a desire to be classified as skilled workers as opposed to unskilled.

World’s Greatest Dad

In this black comedy, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, Williams plays Lance Clayton. Lance finds his son dead, the apparent victim of auto-erotic asphyxiation gone horribly awry. In order to give the boy some dignity in death, Lance pens a suicide note before summoning the authorities. By doing this he attracts an overwhelming amount of community and media attention. Co-starring Daryl Sabara and Morgan Murphy. Goldthwait:

But it’s human nature. We all know we’re making a movie. We all know he’s acting, but it’s human nature to come over and start trying to elevate a mood. All that shit in the bedroom – everybody f-cking hated it. We couldn’t wait to get out of the bedroom. It was all just nasty, you know, all the scenes in the bedroom are rotten to begin with.

Winter’s Bone

Lawrence stars in the film Winter’s Bone as Ree, a girl trying to hunt down her father and keep her family together. The role was very important to Lawrence:

I’d have walked on hot coals to get the part. I thought it was the best female role I’d read – ever. I was so impressed by Ree’s tenacity and that she didn’t take no for an answer. For the audition, I had to fly on the redeye to New York and be as ugly as possible. I didn’t wash my hair for a week, I had no makeup on. I looked beat up in there. I think I had icicles hanging from my eyebrows.

Everything Must Go

Ferrell stars in this comedy drama film based on the short story Why Don’t You Dance? by Raymond Carver. He plays alcoholic salesman Nick Halsey who gets fired from his job of 16 years, loses his wife, and gets locked out of his house at the same time. With his bank accounts frozen and all of his possessions strewn about the front lawn, he tries to get to grips with his life as he sells his belongings one by one.

First of all, I just really thought it was one of the stronger scripts I had read in a long time. Dan Rush the writer and director had done such a remarkable job and I loved getting a chance to play a character like this, you know, a real piece of acting for me. I also love the unique premise of this movie, I felt like you know, to watch a guy be exposed to the entire world and live his life in front of everyone was something I hadn’t seen before.

Salt

Jolie plays CIA officer Evelyn Salt in this thriller directed by Phillip Noyce. Salt is accused by a defector of being a Russian spy. With each attempt Salt makes to prove her innocence, her mentor, Winter, only grows more suspicious of her true motivations. The longer she eludes capture by ambitious CIA agent Peabody, the higher the stakes get. Co-starring Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

We spent a lot of time with different people who’d worked in the Russia House and the CIA, and I think the biggest note I took from them was how isolated and lonely they felt not being able to talk about their life and their work with anybody in their family, and what a sacrifice that is.

On making a sequel:

I talked to Sly and he’s going for all the marbles this time, and he’s going to get everybody in this time. Even Stone Cold Steve Austin who took two bullets in the last film, he’s coming back, too. Hopefully, they’ll start shooting it while we’re young enough to survive.

Blessed and Cursed

In this independent film, Haddon plays Dwight Hawkins, a man who struggles to realize his God-given purpose. Compelled to help his father after his dreams are derailed, Dwight must choose between family obligation or pursuing his own dreams of singing gospel music. A new position as a Psalmist at the city’s largest church bring challenges as Dwight gets caught in a scheme orchestrated by the church’s Bishop.

It was miraculous to get Blessed & Cursed finished because we really got it done with no money. It exceeded our expectations to the point where Showtime was playing it all year long. In addition, the DVD was flying off the shelves everywhere, not just here in America but all through the U.K. and Africa where people are tapping into the culture of what we are doing with these films.

The actor is joined by Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, and Ken Watanabe. On his character:

He’s the organized one. I think Cobb is sort of like the artist and I consider Arthur sort of like the producer. He the one that’s saying, “Okay, you have your vision, I’m going to figure out how you can do you thing and make the nuts and bolts underneath it work.”

Despicable Me

In this animated comedy, Brand voices Dr. Nefario, a friendly and good-natured scientist who works with the main character, Gru, who is voiced by Steve Carell. He lives in an underground laboratory, in which he builds various gadgets and machines for Gru in his mission to steal the moon. The film also features the voices of Jason Segel, Miranda Cosgrove, and Julie Andrews.

Dr. Nefario in this movie is a mentor and also a sort of bumbling half-wit. You know they say, genius and madness are really close to each other – they’re not, are they – because I know some mad people and they’re idiots, and I think that Dr. Nefario is like an idiot. He’s sort of old, makes terrible mistakes, there are wonderful contraptions, some of which were needlessly manufactured on account of mishearing information.

I don’t know, really. I mean, I love working with Jonah, and Nick Stoller, the writer and director, and it’s always amazing to be in Judd Apatow films; I’ve been in two. But I don’t know if I’m doing the character again, I would if they offered.

Beauty & the Briefcase

Duff stars in the ABC Family movie Beauty & the Briefcase. Duff plays Lane, who is an aspiring fashion journalist looking for love in the business world while writing a piece for Cosmopolitan magazine.

You know what? A few of my friends had read the book, Confessions of a Working Girl, and this script is based on that book so it was pretty intriguing to me and I read the story and it was fun and it was lighthearted and it kind of brought me back to my roots a little bit with all the physical comedy that was involved and it was a chance for me to executive produce a project which I’ve been looking for and this seemed like a good fit.

The Book of Eli

Washington plays the role of Eli in the 2010 action adventure The Book of Eli, alongside Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis. Set in post-apocalyptic America, a drifter known as Eli is on a mission heading west with a book of important value. Along the way mobster Carnegie, played by Oldman, is set on killing Eli and stealing the book by any means necessary.

There’s this whole issue, without giving it away, is he blind, is he not… If you look at the movie, sometimes I actually bumped into stuff, and they used it.
