It was so much fun. Just to be on that set and learn from these people and get to watch Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tom Hanks do these amazing scenes together, directed by Mike Nichols, it was for me like going to school.

I responded to it because I couldn’t believe that this had ever happened. In reading the book, I thought that this was a serious piece of journalism that describes something that’s almost surrealistic hilarious, as well as historically accurate.

Cage plays Benjamin Gates who must follow a clue left in John Wilkes Booth’s diary to prove his ancestor’s innocence in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Cage co-stars with Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha.

History is a world treasure and people seem to have picked up on that fact so I’d like to think that people around the world are interested in that. It is also good because it is based in our time not past or future but now.

The Mist

Based off the short story in King’s compilation, Skeleton Crew, The Mist is adapted into film by director Frank Darabont. Starring Thomas Jane, the film is made on am $18 million budget and grosses $57.3 million in the box office. Darabont took a risk by rewritting the screenplay’s ending to tear away from King’s original vision. To his surprise, King praised the ending, describing it as one that would be unsettling in studios.

The ending is such a jolt—wham! It’s frightening. The story is less about the monsters outside than about the monsters inside, the people you’re stuck with, your friends and neighbors breaking under the strain.

There are certain moments where I felt actually shy – and called home, just to explain that the fun movie that I had done that was digital animation was, in fact, a little different than [what] we expected.

It was an amazing thing to be a part of…. it’s a kid’s movie but it’s also something as an adult, it really reawakens this excitement about everything. Finding magic in any everyday object.

Man of the Year

Williams plays Tom Dobbs in this drama, directed by Barry Levinson. Dobbs, during his talk show, makes an offhand comment that he would be a better president than the leader who currently occupies the White House. Afterwards a grass-roots campaign conducted by his many fans finds him unexpectedly ushered into the Oval Office and forced to live up to his promise. Co-starring Laura Linney and Lewis Black.

It’s all about money. And so that’s really the main issue behind it all. As long as we want to play this game, that you’re going to go and raise $250 million to be the President and think this President is going to be free enough to go do what he thinks is correct without maximum amount of influence to all the people he’s beholden to, it’s just not realistic.

It’s acting, first of all. And just because I play certain parts like that, doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t play other parts. Like people were shocked when I did Training Day. But that was one of the easiest roles for me.

A Mighty Heart

In this drama, directed by Michael Winterbottom, Jolie plays Mariane Pearl, the wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl. Co-starring: Dan Futterman and Irrfan Khan.

I was very worried. I’ve never been so nervous about anything. I work very hard but I’m very casual about it, it doesn’t keep me up at night but this one did. The night before shooting I was tossing and turning and imagining everything that could possibly go wrong. I felt bad that I was even assuming that I could play this woman that I respected so much and I felt humbled to a point of being unable to move.

Just going back to the old days when I was into going to church and remembering that there were–as a Protestant, which is Catholic light–once again the idea of somebody who could really advise and has something to offer. That’s why I think for that it was just remembering those guys that I kind of grew up with in the Episcopal church, which is “There is no purgatory, just spiritual escrow.”

1408

Mikael Håfström adapts the King short story, 1408, into a feature film starring John Cusack as a horror novelist who made his career by investigating potentially haunted houses. Via an annonymous tip, Cusack spends a night at New York City’s Dolphin Hotel in the infamous Room 1408, although he is strongly advised against it by the motels manager, played by Samuel L. Jackson. The film grossed $132 million after being produced on a budget of $25 million. Like many of the film adaptations of his work, King was less than thrilled about the Swedish directors work.

[To adapt my work into film] you have to concentrate on character – and throw out the notion that you need a lot of blood spurting and eyeballs flying. That’s not what fear is about.

Pike plays Nikki Gardner in the Gregory Hoblit-directed crime thriller. Gardner begins a relationship with a future employee at her law firm, but he is dragged back into his career as a district attorney after a failed attempt to try a man for murder. Co-starring Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, and David Strathairn.

It was the film rather than the part in this case. I said after Pride and Prejudice that I’d like to do a thriller because it was the kind of thing that I haven’t done and then this came along. I’d seen Primal Fear, which was Gregory Hoblit’s most famous film, and I was so disconcerted by that film that I thought, ‘My goodness, this is something that he’s going to do really really well.’ Aand I just wanted to be part of it.
