Mike Nichols dies age 83
Nichols dies of a heart attack at the age of 83. Nichols is survived by his wife, ABC News anchor, Diane Sawyer. ABC News president James Goldston’s statement:
He was a true visionary, winning the highest honors in the arts for his work as a director, writer, producer and comic, and was one of a tiny few to win the EGOT – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – in his lifetime. No one was more passionate about his craft than Mike.
Martin Salia dies from Ebola
Salia dies at Nebraska Medical Center while being treated for Ebola. Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the hospital’s biocontainment unit:
It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share this news. Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to save him.
Diem Brown dies at the age of 32
DiemBrown dies at the age of 32 after a lengthy battle with cancer. MTV pays tribute to its reality star in the following statement:

Shaylee Chuckulnaskit 
dies of her injuries. She was 14. Her family:

John Shields Jr dies at 82
Shields, former CEO of Trader Joe’s, dies after a long illness. Mr. Shields was the CEO from 1988 to 2001.
Second victim dies
Gia Soriano dies of her injuries. She was 14. Soriano’s family:

Dies from wounds
Soriano dies from wounds suffered during the Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting. Soriano is the third person to die. Three people remain hospitalized. Soriano family statement:

Toddler dies in Mali
Two-year-old Fanta Kone dies after contracting the virus. Her grandmother traveled more than 600 miles from back to Mali from southern Guinea after her father died of the virus there. WHO:
The child’s symptomatic state during the bus journey is especially concerning, as it presented multiple opportunities for exposures – including high-risk exposures – involving many people.
Killed in Syria
Hassan is the fourth person from Portsmouth killed while fighting for ISIS. Chairman of the Portsmouth Jami Mosque, Abdul Jalil:
It has been confirmed with the family that he has died. Right now they are very upset. I am saddened and again shocked for the community about this news.
It is thought he died in Kobane.
Confirmed dead
Davis is identified as the Placer County deputy who has died. He would have been 43 years old next Wednesday. His father, Michael David Sr., was killed on the same day 26 years earlier, also in the line of duty. He was a 10-year veteran of the Homicide squad. Placer County Sheriff Bonner:
I think there are those people who would say, ‘I wish you’d killed him.’ No. that’s not who we are. We are not him. We did our job. I am incredibly proud of the men and woman who go out there every day and put their lives on the line. Today, this organization, this family has suffered a horrific loss, and my heartfelt thanks to all those who reached out to us.
Michael David Davis Sr. died Oct. 24, 1988 during a joint drug smuggling investigation when the helicopter he was in crashed into the mountainous area of western Imperial County, according to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department.

Soldier dies
The solider dies of his wounds at Ottawa Civic Hospital. Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney, minister of employment and social development, confirms:

Father dies
Paul Cantlie passes away at the age of 81 from penumonia-related complications. He was brought up in Nanking until the Japanese invasion during the second world war, and his father was said to have designed much of the railway infrastructure throughout China. Cantlie later served as a governor of Southampton General hospital. A statement says that the family had tried to contact John in the last few days before the death was made public. His family:
[He will be] remembered by many for his fortitude, quiet courage, wry humour and keen intelligence, as well as for his great gentleness.
Soldier dies after attack
Vincent, 53, dies
of his injuries. The second soldier, who is not identified, is recovering in hospital. Vincent was a 28-year veteran of the Canadian Forces who had been stationed at bases across Canada. He was posted in North Bay, Ont., until 2012 as a refrigeration and mechanical technician wing construction engineer, and had also served as a military firefighter. He loved cycling. Dwayne MacIntosh, who worked with Vincent for three years on HMCS St John’s:

Dies in car crash
Shim, a Lebanese-American reporter for Press TV, is killed in a car crash in Turkey a day after stating that Turkish intelligence was spying on her. She had been reporting that ISIS militants had crossed the border in trucks used by NGOs to carry food. Press TV broadcast:

Oscar de la Renta dies at 82
De la Renta dies in his Connecticut home surrounded by family and friends. The cause of de la Renta’s death is not clear at this time. Family statement:
While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar’s hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company. All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar’s example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much.
Confirmed dead
Upham’s family confirms that a body found in a wooded area near Forest Ridge Drive in Auburn is the missing actress. The cause of death is yet unknown. Family friend, filmmaker Tracy Rector:
The family has stated that, after seeing the body, they still do not feel that Misty Upham committed suicide. The family wants everyone to know that the Auburn police did not help with this situation at all. They refused to help. When she disappeared on Oct. 5, the family knew something was seriously wrong – it was out of character for her to be gone so long without being in touch – and they repeatedly went to the police, who insisted there was no cause for concern.
Mark Bell dies age 43
Bell dies following complications after surgery. Bell’s label, Warp Records, announces his death:

Warns against traditional remedies
The UN body says practices like rubbing a patient’s body with limes and onions or drinking saltwater are ineffective against the virus, and warns against fake vaccines and cures.
Decades of scientific research have failed to find a curative or preventive agent of proven safety and effectiveness in humans, though a number of promising products are currently under development. All rumours of any other effective products or practices are false. Their use can be dangerous. In Nigeria, for example, at least two people have died after drinking salt water, rumoured to be protective.
Thomas Eric Duncan dies of Ebola
Duncan is pronounced dead at 7:51 a.m. at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, where he was admitted Sept. 28 and has been kept in isolation. Texas officials are monitoring 10 people who had direct contact with him while he was symptomatic, as well as 38 others who may have had contact. None have shown symptoms of the disease to this point. They will be monitored for 21 days, the normal incubation period for the disease. Hospital:
