Cafferkey returns to hospital for a third time after contracting the virus initially two years ago. She is being treated at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University hospital. NHS spokesperson:

Antonin Scalia dead at 79
Scalia dies in his sleep while on a hunting trip in West Texas, according to a statement by Chief Justice Roberts:

Announces Black Lives Matter donation

Injured at home
Senator Brazeau is found with a serious injury in his home in Ottawa. He undergoes emergency surgery and is in critical but stable condition. The nature of his injuries and the cause of his injuries are not disclosed, but police say that there is no criminal investigation. Brazeau has been on paid leave of absence since 2013 due to charges of fraud and assault. He is scheduled to stand trial on the fraud charges in March.
Donates water to Flint residents
Cher donates over 180,000 bottles of water to Flint residents in response to the water crisis. Shipments will start on 18 Jan. The water will be distributed through the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and was provided through Icelandic Glacial, where the singer had contacts who agreed to double Cher’s donation. Cher:

Mos Def is ordered to leave South Africa within 14 days. He has been living in Cape Town with his family since 2013 on an expired tourist visa. Phillips dies in prison. Prison authorities believe that he took his own life, although the means by which he did so was not disclosed. Nebraska coach:

Funeral
Lemmy’s funeral is held in Los Angeles with family and colleagues. The funeral features tributes by such luminaries as Slash, Dave Grohl, and Rob Halford.
