Retires over safety issues
Borland is retiring due to concerns about the long-term effects stemming from repetitive head trauma. He says he made his decision after talking it over with family members, concussion researchers, friends and teammates, and after studying what is known about the relationship between football and neurodegenerative disease.
I just honestly want to do what’s best for my health. From what I’ve researched and what I’ve experienced, I don’t think it’s worth the risk…I feel largely the same, as sharp as I’ve ever been. For me, it’s wanting to be proactive. I’m concerned that if you wait ’til you have symptoms, it’s too late. … There are a lot of unknowns. I can’t claim that X will happen. I just want to live a long, healthy life, and I don’t want to have any neurological diseases or die younger than I would otherwise…I just thought to myself, ‘What am I doing? Is this how I’m going to live my adult life, banging my head, especially with what I’ve learned and know about the dangers?’
Joins ‘IO’
Fanning signs on for a role in the sci-fi film IO. She will play one of the last people on Earth, who is trying to find a cure for the dying planet before the final shuttle from Earth leaves her stranded. Fanning is set to star alongside actor Diego Luna in the film, which will go into production this year.

Quits Fashion Police
Griffin quits Fashion Police just two months after joining the show.
When I chose to step into the shoes of my beloved friend Joan Rivers at Fashion Police, I was thrilled to continue her legacy as a woman being brash and eccentric on television. I am a freedom-loving female and gay rights activist who loves to find the funny in all people, attitudes, beliefs, and appearances, but only when the context permits intelligent humor. I thought that I could bring my brand of humor to Fashion Police so that beautiful people in beautiful dresses could be teased when appropriate. My brand of humor, while unrepentant and unafraid, is all about CONTEXT. There is plenty to make fun of in pop culture without bringing people’s bodies into it. Again people…context! Listen, I’m no saint — I’m a feminist AND a Gurrrrl who loves an offensive joke or a well-timed barb and you will find plenty in my repertoire. But I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference. I want to help women, gay kids, people of color and anyone who feels underrepresented to have a voice and a LAUGH! That has been my platform for decades and my body of work speaks for itself. After 7 episodes of Fashion Police, I discovered that my style does not fit with the creative direction of the show & now it’s time to move on. I wish E! and the E! only the best and I hope to continue to make you all laugh performing live or on television where I can be smart, irreverent, unrepentant and unafraid in an observational way that is candid, honest and justified. Terry Pratchett dies aged 66
The author dies at home, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. His publisher, Larry Findlay:

Claude Sitton dies at 89
Sitton passes away at the age of 89 after experiencing congenital heart failure. The Pulitzer Prize winner had been in Atlanta hospice.
Retires after eight seasons
After eight seasons with the 49ers, Willis retires from the NFL.
In my head, I’m already a Hall of Famer. I am leaving this with closure, saying that I am happy today, more happy today than I was the day I was drafted. That says something to me…I have no regrets. I’ve had the most amazing eight years of football of my life. I am so humbled to have had this opportunity. I’ve been so humbled to have played this game…I would love nothing more than to be able to lace up them cleats and not worry, ‘Are my feet going to be all right today just to practice so I don’t look old at 30?’
Injures hand
Depp injures his hand while in Australia for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He was not on set, nor was he filming at the time. Depp is returning to the Unites States to have surgery. The release date of the film remains unchanged.

Lawless joins the cast of Ash Vs. Evil Dead as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the source of the Evil outbreaks.
Dies from poisoning
Jagger dies after returning home from Crufts. Jaggers’s co-owners do not believe the other competitors poisoned him, but they do think that the poisoner was someone with a grudge against dogs in general or the dog show in particular. A post-mortem examination finds poisoned pieces of meat inside his stomach.
He was a typical Irish Setter, totally trustworthy and so loved. We are devastated…We can’t and we won’t think that this was the act of another exhibitor. If we thought this, we couldn’t go on, and the last 30 years would be a complete waste. So I ask all of you to unite in finding the perpetrator who did this.
Authorities haven’t, as of yet, been asked to investigate.
Sam Simon dies age 59
Simon, surrounded by family and his dog, passes away at his home after battling colon cancer. He was 59 years old. The Sam Simon Foundation:
