Mercer gives an interview to The Talks. He discusses how he writes a song and being a loner as a kid.

I have a fondness for Germany, the happiest part of my childhood was here I think, but in some ways it kind of screwed me up. I would lose friends a lot, so I shied away from making new ones. My sister was very different from me. She was very gregarious and was able to make friends all the time. She ended up with tons of friends because we moved a lot.

I was very curious about how the lyrics would be affected by the tango atmosphere and instrumentation. What would happen to the lyric? I think that was the main source of the interest for me. How would the lyric be affected by the atmosphere that tango provided?

We taped conversations between a Russian officer and his office in Moscow. We know for sure that several minutes before the missile was launched, there was a report to a Russian officer that the plane was coming…They knew the plane was coming with constant speed, in constant direction…and should have known it was not a fighter jet but a big civilian plane
