Portman plays Sam in the 2004 comedy drama Garden State, a story about television actor Andrew Largeman, played by Zach Braff, and his return home to New Jersey from LA after the death of his mother.

I was really excited to do a movie that was about people, after doing something that was so big like Star Wars.

It was different. I always look for a challenge and something that’s different. This definitely had every element and promise of being that. I wanted to work with Michael Mann and these guys, Jada and Jamie. It was very challenging, really challenging.

A Cinderella Story

Film Appearance0 Comments

Duff stars in the feature film A Cinderella Story. Duff plays high school character Sam who falls in love with character Austin Ames—played by Chad Michael Murray—while wearing a mask at a school dance. A modern twist on the Cinderella story, Austin tries to find out who Sam is after she drops her cell phone leaving the dance.

Well, I’m kind of like Sam in a way. You’re very cautious and you don’t want to put yourself out there to get yourself let down or hurt or something. But I guess if you really care about someone and they really care about you too, then you sometimes just go for it and let everything go. And have fun with it. It can be exciting.

Promised Land

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pike plays the character Rose in Amos Gitai’s crime drama. She offers hope to a group of foreign prostitutes smuggled into Israel. Gitai:

Other films I’ve done, like Kadosh and Kippur, are all dealing with homogeneous Israeli microcosms, but with a critical attitude to religion or military activity. And now, with this group of films, starting with Promised Land and Free Zone, I’m more into the marriage of opposites, of difference, of the fragmentation of the coherence.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Film Appearance0 Comments

In the third installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Watson returns as Hermione Granger, helping Harry, Ron, and Professor Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) find Sirius Black, an escaped serial killer, while uncovering the mysteries surrounding the night Harry became an orphan.

Oh, I loved it! It’s my favorite book, my favorite script, and it’s such a fantastic part for Hermoine. She really comes into her own, and I think you see a really different side to her than you have in the other two [films]. I think it’s much more personal, and this film has really tested and challenged me, and I’ve definitely enjoyed it the best out of the three because of that … I hope that I did her justice and that she’s what (fans) thought she’d be.

Paris is promised the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, though she is already wed to Menelaus. He abducts her and sparks the 10 year siege of Troy. The more I got to know Menelaus, the more I liked him. He’s one of these poor guys that even though he has a lot going for him, even when he won, he lost.

Troy

Film Appearance0 Comments

Pitt stars in this epic war film based on Homer’s Illiad. As the demigod Achilles, he leads the Greek army to war against the Trojans because of a bet that involved Prince Paris of Troy and Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus. He challenges Paris’ brother Hector to single combat, kills him, and drags his corpse back to the Greek camp. The film also stars Brendan Gleeson, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, and Diane Kruger. On his character:

There’s a real telling line when he says, ‘I want what all men want. I just wanted more.’ There’s a real restlessness, and as I say, an isolation in the guy. Whether he’s running from death, or trying to find himself in a personal glory, he’s at a point where he’s had that glory and that… that hasn’t done it for him.

I just had to jump off a wheel barrel into a crash-mat and I completely got whiplash… It made me really gun-shy actually. But then the next day I was 60 feet upside-down in a tree.

Man on Fire

Washington plays Joyhn W. Creasy in the action thriller Man on Fire, alongside Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, and Dakota Fanning. Ex-CIA agent Creasy takes up a new job as the bodyguard for 9-year-old Lupita Ramos in Mexico City. After Lupita is kidnapped, Creasy is torn. He promises to find her and vows to kill anyone who is involved.

When we were working on Man on Fire, Tony Scott sent me a tape about the Iceman, the guy that killed all of those people. Later I saw this footage of a young girl getting shot. She didn’t do anything but drop. It’s morbid fascination, but that’s what I’m looking for.

Hawking

TV Appearance0 Comments
Stars in the TV movie Hawking – a drama documenting the life and work of Professor Stephen Hawking, a man whom, despite being diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21, has managed to shake the scientific community with his theories on the nature of the universe. Despite being a reputably private person, Stephen Hawking meets with members of the film team and with Cumberbatch to discuss the trials and triumphs of his life.

It’s really odd when you meet somebody you’re about to play, and Stephen must have been as terrified by that as I was. […] The first thing you get when you meet someone with motor neurone disease is the complete person. You see past the disability instantly to all the rich complexities of a human character.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Hawking - Only human (but still a genius!)

Taking Lives

Jolie plays a top FBI profiler in Taking Lives. Jolie decides to work with Canadian police to catch a serial killer. Jolie happens to fall in love with a mystery man only to find out he is the one doing the killings. She then fakes a pregnancy to lure her killer into her home. Other cast include Ethan Hawke, Oliver Martinez, and Kiefer Sutherland.

With this one, we studied a lot with the FBI and we tried to get into the mind of the serial killers, both the people playing the killers and for the cops studying them. We all had this kind of really dark crash course in what it’s like to think that way and to see real cases. It was quite shocking to see what they’re really like and how they’re not different from us. Sometimes they have wives and kids and nice houses… It’s strange.
