O’Brien weds advertising executive Liza Powel in her hometown of Seattle, Washington. The couple met in 2000 during a skit rehearsal for the TV talk show host’s Late Night program and dated for 18 months before deciding to tie the knot. The ceremony is held at St. James Cathedral and officiated by the TV host’s friend and Harvard roommate, Fr. Paul O’Brien. On meeting his bride:

Autopsy
An autopsy reveals that Aaliyah suffered serious trauma after the plane crash that left her and eight others dead. The singer was killed by severe burns and a blow to the head. Pathologist:

Aaliyah Haughton dies in plane crash age 22
Investigators find Aaliyah and eight others dead in a Bahamas plane crash. In route to Miami, the Cessna 402 crashes shortly after takeoff. The Cessna’s pilot and video crew get into an argument before takeoff over the weight of the equipment and passengers. The pilot admits the plane is overloaded but takes off anyway. Aaliyah dies instantly in the crash while one victim dies later in a Miami hospital. Emil Wilbekin, editor-in-chief of Vibe magazine:

A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Spielberg directs this science fiction film based on a screenplay by Stanley Kubrick. A young boy who is actually a robot lives in a futuristic society where machines have become essentially sentient. Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, and Frances O’Connor star.
I would speculate that Stanley [Kubrick] would have made and told much the same story I told because I based my screenplay on a 90-page treatment [concept] Stanley had prepared from all of his own ideas.

Spirited Away
Miyazaki’s most successful movie in the West, Spirited Away, is released. The fantasy tale follows a girl named Chihiro as she attempts to save her parents in a world of spirits.
After I started production, the key animator, the art director and the producer came out on holiday with me and we had this blackboard and tried to draft out which direction the film was going in. I explained, “I think we’ll be able to do this kind of story, with this kind of ending,” and then Suzuki-san (the producer) said: “Ah. That will take three hours. I don’t want to make a three-hour movie!”
Retires
Brooks announces he is retiring after he releases and promotes one more album.
I’ve done my career with the old saying, ‘Burn bright, burn fast’. I wasn’t going to be somebody that we could come to really appreciate, like Billy Joel and James Taylor, and know that their stuff was timeless.
Joins BBC
The BBC announces that Highfield will join the corporation as Director of New Media & Technology, starting in October. He is the youngest ever member of the Executive Committee, reporting directly to Director General Greg Dyke. The new media division consists of interactive television, BBC Online and a new research and development department called Imagineering, which has been rolled out over the past two months.
BBC Online is an incredible achievement and the advances made in interactive services are very exciting. I hope my experience, combined with the power of the BBC brand, will be an unbeatable combination.
Pitt, Aniston marry
Pitt and Aniston wed after almost two years of dating. The private ceremony takes place at the Malibu mansion of TV producer Marcy Carsey, and is attended by 200 guests. The couple met in 1998 through a blind date set up by their respective agents. The bride wears a gown by Lawrence Steele, while the groom dons a tuxedo by Hedi Slimane.
Hafez al-Assad dies at 69
The Syrian president al-Assad dies in Damascus of a heart attack. He is survived by four of his five children. His dynastic guidelines pass succession to his son, Bashar al-Assad.
