Mandelbaum gives an interview to Shape Magazine about gaining a spot on a professional sports team with out a fitness background.
It was kind of a happy accident I’ve always been in shape, but for a long time I was one of those women who ate lettuce and ran or took different classes at the gym, and that was it. When I was 42, a friend suggested I try CrossFit, and one of the coaches there saw my potential. He suggested we work together, and two months later I entered and placed second in my first competition. After that I really committed myself, and once I turned 45 I was able to start competing in the Masters division at the CrossFit Games. I’ve been lucky enough to get great sponsors, and one of my sponsors (Nutriforce Sports) is owned by the company that also owns my team, the New York Rhinos.

My mom owns a home child care, so I’ve been around kids my whole life. And I heard the stories about children being left in hot cars so often, I thought there had to be a way to stop that from happening it can happen. Parents get busy, they have a lot on their mind. If the baby is quiet or sleeping in the backseat, it makes it even more likely it could happen.

It’s a very surreal experience so far. I get to meet all the boys at the performance center. Been trying to meet all the coaches and just trying to settle in.
Interview
In an interview Linklater discusses Boyhood starting with how the idea came to him:
In a flash. I was kind of problem solving. I had a problem in that my ideas for a story were dispersed over the years. You can’t make a film that way. If you cast 12 people at different ages in the role, audiences wouldn’t believe it. You can’t keep changing the kids out, and I felt that limitation. I had almost given up on the idea when it hit me: What if we filmed a little bit every year? That became the challenge, to show this family slowly, gradually changing.
It’s a crazy way to make a film, admittedly. But it was kind of the only way to tell this particular story. I was trying to say something about growing up, who we become. Are we the same people at 18 that we were at 7? It became the only way to tell the story.

We did a little big every year. I went to Austin and we’d rehearse and workshop and meet the kids again and see what was going on in their lives we’d shoot for three or four days and then I’d go away for a year. And we’d find time to meet again the next year.
