Report: Almost no women used site
Gizmodo’s Editor-in-chief says that an an analysis of Ashley Madison’s data shows that women rarely used the site. looked for patterns in IP addresses, profile data, email addresses and mails sent. Newitz:
Then, three data fields changed everything. The first field, called mail_last_time, contained a timestamp indicating the last time a member checked the messages in their Ashley Madison inbox. If a person never checked their inbox, the field was blank. But even if they’d checked their messages only once, the field contained a date and time. About two-thirds of the men, or 20.2 million of them, had checked the messages in their accounts at least once. But only 1,492 women had ever checked their messages. It was a serious anomaly.
The pattern was reflected in another data field, too. This one, called chat_last_time contained the timestamp for the last time a member had struck up a conversation using the Ashley Madison chat system. Roughly 11 million men had engaged in chat, but only 2400 women had.
Overall, the picture is grim indeed. Out of 5.5 million female accounts, roughly zero percent had ever shown any kind of activity at all, after the day they were created. The men’s accounts tell a story of lively engagement with the site, with over 20 million men hopefully looking at their inboxes, and over 10 million of them initiating chats. The women’s accounts show so little activity that they might as well not be there.
Top Gun 2 possible
At the Mission: Impossible premiere, Cruise says it would be fun to do Top Gun 2.
It’s tricky to figure out. If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do. I’d like to fly those jets again, but we’ve got to do all the jets practical — no CGI on the jets … If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick.
Ejects Ramos from press conference
At a press conference before his Iowa speech Trump refuses to answer questions from Univision’s Ramos, who is asking them out of turn.
Trump: Excuse me, sit down, you weren’t called. Sit down.
Ramos: I have the right to ask questions.
Trump: You haven’t been called. Go back to Univision.
Ramos: You can not deport 11 million people.
When Ramos continues, Trump has him removed by security. Trump later says he doesn’t mind if Ramos is let back in. Ramos comes back later and discusses his stance with Trump.
Kelly ‘not a quality journalist’
Trump says he “totally disagrees” with Ailes and said he does not think Kelly is a “quality journalist”:
I totally disagree with the FOX statement. I do not think Megyn Kelly is a quality journalist. I think her questioning of me, despite all of the polls saying I won the debate, was very unfair. Hopefully in the future I will be proven wrong and she will be able to elevate her standards to a level of professionalism that a network such as FOX deserves. More importantly, I am very pleased to see the latest polls from Public Policy Polling showing me at a strong number one with 35% in New Hampshire, the Monmouth University poll showing me, again at number one, with 30% in South Carolina and the latest national poll from Gravis where I am again the clear front runner with 40%. It was also just announced that I won the prestigious corn kernel poll at the Iowa State Fair by a landslide.
Farrakhan, Eminem meet
In an over 2 1/2-hour dinner in Eminem’s Detroit hotel room, Farrakhan talks about the responsibilities that stars like Eminem have toward society to influence people positively. Spokesperson:
It was a beautiful discussion. Eminem was engaged. His manager (Paul Rosenberg) was engaged. It was a great time and experience…[Farrakhan talked to Eminem about] using his influence and using his power through rap music and hip-hop culture to influence people positively, so our children, our youth, can grow into more positive humans.

Guitarist interview
Hillage is interviewed for Guitarist magazine. He talks about Gong and his guitars. If he could change one thing:
The vinyl version of Rainbow Dome Musick was completely unlistenable because of the scratches. It was only when we got the CD that we could actually listen to the thing. The LP came out originally in 1979 and it was clear vinyl and generally, coloured vinyl is not as good as black because of the way they have to clear out the pressing thing – there’s a whole esoteric explanation for that. There were just a lot of ‘Rice Krispies’ on it, but we couldn’t really change that because that’s all there was in those days.
His worst experience performing:
I did a gig on acid and my guitar disappeared while I was playing it. It was rather unpleasant, but I lived to tell the tale. It was a Gong gig in a Spanish town near Barcelona called Terrassa and it all went a bit pear-shaped! Miquette [Giraudy, keyboards/vocals] was there, but she wasn’t actually on stage and she helped me keep it all together.
He also says that that he did not cause the breakup of Gong or have a falling out with Daevid Allen after the Gong Est Mort reunion in 1977.
Ailes: trump should apologize to Kelly
Alies responds to Trump’s tweets about Kelly:
Donald Trump’s surprise and unprovoked attack on Megyn Kelly during her show last night is as unacceptable as it is disturbing. Megyn Kelly represents the very best of American journalism and all of us at FOX News Channel reject the crude and irresponsible attempts to suggest otherwise. I could not be more proud of Megyn for her professionalism and class in the face of all of Mr. Trump’s verbal assaults. Her questioning of Mr. Trump at the debate was tough but fair, and I fully support her as she continues to ask the probing and challenging questions that all presidential candidates may find difficult to answer. Donald Trump rarely apologizes, although in this case, he should. We have never been deterred by politicians or anyone else attacking us for doing our job, much less allowed ourselves to be bullied by anyone and we’re certainly not going to start now. All of our journalists will continue to report in the fair and balanced way that has made FOX News Channel the number one news network in the industry.
Stern: Trump will be nominee
Stern says Trump will be the 2016 GOP presidential nominee.
I’ll tell you why I think he’s going to be the nominee: He’s proven that no matter what he says, people dig him. [Voters] hate illegal immigrants but they just feel funny saying it — whether it’s rational or not — ‘Is the illegal immigrant draining your economy?’ Possibly. ‘Is he taking away your job?’ Possibly. I think more or less, people are super tired of politicians, meaning that they like the idea of a successful businessman running the country who might actually be able to get s— done…But the problem with it is, and Donald Trump will find this: being the president isn’t like being the president of a corporation. You still got to go through Congress for everything you want to do. And that’s the tough part. You’ve got to be one who can consolidate on both sides of the aisle, some sort of coalition. And it’s very difficult.
Attacks Kelly
Trump tweets and retweets posts attacking Kelly:
I liked The Kelly File much better without @megynkelly. Perhaps she could take another eleven day unscheduled vacation!

Break for solo work
One Direction plan an extended break as the members work separately on different projects. One Direction will promote their latest album until February and released the official music video of their single, Drag Me Down before their extended break.
They are taking a hiatus so they can work on individual projects for a while but they are not splitting up
Eat lettuce grown in ISS
NASA astronauts on the International Space Station eat red romaine lettuce, which they freshly harvested from the orbiting lab’s vegetable plant growth system. The space garden snack marks the first time NASA had cleared its astronauts to eat what they grew. Before eating, they clean the lettuce with citric acid-based sanitizing wipes.
Lindgren: That’s awesome
Yui: I like that
Kelly: It tastes like arugula
The three save a few leaves for their Russian cosmonaut crewmates, two of whom are out on a spacewalk. Half of the harvest is frozen on the station so it can be returned to Earth for scientific analysis.
It was one small bite for man, one giant leap for #NASAVEGGIE and our #JourneytoMars. #YearInSpacehttps://t.co/B7Gkfm1Vz0

Apologizes for Ashley Madison sign up
Ashton apologizes for signing up for Ashley Madison website. He says he signed up while using his personal laptop at work two years ago using his personal credit card and personal email address. He says he never had an affair and “no laws have been broken” in using the website.
I deeply regret my affiliation with the site, which has caused a great amount of stress and heartache to my wife and children. I want to publicly apologize to each of them for this embarrassment and my blatant disregard for their feelings. I indulged curiosity about the site, but never went beyond that.
Parents: Steenkamp was leaving Pistorius
Steenkamp’s parents, Barry and June, say she had packed her bags and was ready to leave Oscar Pistorius the day he shot and killed her. June:
He killed her. He admits he killed her…She is dead after [Pistorius made] sure she was dead. Why didn’t he just let her walk away?
Barry:
What actually came out in court is not the truth. We know what we heard there is not right…People actually heard the screams and when he realised that had happened he couldn’t stop. He had to carry on until it was finished.
On the upcoming Supreme Court appeal:
It is not finished – not finished I feel by a long way – and I can only give you my feelings after the final verdict. If the outcome is going to be a longer sentence, are we going to feel better? I don’t know. All we want is the truth to come out in the real justice side of the whole scenario
Pistorius has tried to contact them but they are not ready to talk to him. June:
All I want you to realise is that you have ruined our lives. You’ve taken her life, her possible marriage, or having a baby – our grandchild. You’ve taken her career away… You’ve taken the most precious thing out of our lives.
UNHCR: 264,500 migrants arrived in 2015
UNHCR says that some 264,500 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean this year. They include more than 158,000 who have arrived in Greece — many landing on small islands ill-equipped to deal with the influx — along with about 104,000 who’ve gone to Italy, around 1,950 to Spain and almost 100 to Malta.
Charlottesville tribute
Friends, University of Virginia faculty and community members gather and place flowers in the water to remember Bond. Similar events are held across the country with attendees releasing flowers into bodies of water at 3 p.m., the same time Bond’s family released his ashes into the Gulf of Mexico.
His impact on the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville community is truly immeasurable…He lived a beautiful life that was full of courage, optimism, hope and strength, and taught all of us how we could do the same…I think he’s another person who, even at 75, was gone too soon. You want someone who gives that much to go on for many, many more years.
Georgia flies flags at half-staff

In honor & memory of Julian Bond, I will order flags to fly at half-staff on the State Capitol building & grounds tomorrow until sunset.

Ashley Madison apology
Rader issues a video saying that he set up an account on Ashley Madison two years ago – before he started vlogging – with the intention of having an affair, but ‘never came to close’ to actually being with another woman. He says that both his spouse and God have forgiven him for his actions:
I did make the account. I made the account two years ago. This is an issue that is in our past. This was before I got onto YouTube. I brought this to our church at the time, when I first started… this was brought to my wife’s attention. She has forgiven me for this mistake that I have made in opening the account. I sought forgiveness to God and he has forgiven me. So I’ve been completely cleansed of this sin…I need to be clear that I never had an affair with anybody ever while I’ve been married. This account was opened out of pure fleshly desire and just simple curiosity.
Nia Rader:
I have forgiven Sam and I stand behind him. This is in our past and it’s unfortunate that it’s being dug up right now but our marriage is worth fighting for and it always will be…Marriage is the real deal.
Ashes to be spread in Gulf
Bond’s family says he will be buried at sea, and invite the public to share in the ceremony.
We are honoring his wishes that his body be cremated and his ashes be committed to the Gulf of Mexico. This will be a private, family only service. The final request will be carried out at sea on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. CDT…We invite you to gather at a body of water near your home and precisely at 2:00 p.m., CDT, spread flower petals on the water and join us in bidding farewell to Julian Bond. This gesture will mean a great deal to us as a family and also provide some comfort in knowing that you share our loss.
Mobilizes troops
Kim orders his front line troops onto a war-footing. The move comes after an emergency meeting of the powerful Central Military Commission of which Kim is the chairperson. During the meeting, Kim says:
The troops should be fully battle ready to launch surprise operations while the entire frontline should be placed in a semi-war state.
