Washington plays pilot Whip Whitaker, a commercial airline pilot with an addiction to drugs and alcohol. After a malfunction on flight 227 results in a crash landing, Whitaker is faced with criminal charges for being intoxicated while on duty. Also starring Nadine Velazquez and John Goodman. On preparing for his role:
I ate a lot. I ate what I wanted and I ate late at night. I would come home from work. I didn’t overeat. But if I wanted a hamburger and fries and shake and a piece of apple pie with ice cream on it, I had it.
Alex Cross
Perry plays a detective who is torn between justice and personal vengeance in the movie Alex Cross. When a wealthy and well-connected woman is found dead in her mansion Cross and his team is assigned to the case. They soon find themselves playing a cat and mouse game with a man that remains unidentifiable. After his wife is killed by the same mystery man, the case becomes a personal obsession for Cross.
Well, me being on screen and having the opportunity to just focus in on the character, be the character, and experience all of his different levels and complexities, from the doctor to the family man to being sensitive to being a complete animal when he’s been wrong and has to track the killer. All of those things were quite intriguing to me. I had the opportunity to play and be all of those emotions.
Looper
Gordon-Levitt stars in this sci-fi action thriller as a young hired assassin – or “looper” – named Joe. He lives in a world where time travel exists, but is used by crime syndicates to eliminate their targets. Like every hit man, Joe is expected to “close the loop” by assassinating his older self, played by Bruce Willis. The two Joes come face to face and attempt to deal with the implications of their encounter. The actor’s co-stars include Jeff Daniels as the future mob boss and Emily Blunt as young Joe’s girlfriend. On the concept of the movie:
I would say sincerity is more important than originality. You could cite all kinds of influences that this draws from. What’s most important to me is — are you sincere? Do you have something to say? I feel like this movie does.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
In this coming-of-age drama, directed by Stephen Chbosky, Watson plays Sam, a free-spirited high school senior who, with her stepbrother Patrick, form a friendship with Charlie, a newcomer to their school. Co-starring Logan Lerman, Erza Miller, Mae Whitman, Nina Drobev.
I’d been reading scripts after the fourth Harry Potter movie around the age of 15, 16 and just didn’t read anything that I really loved instantly . . . it’s almost not that I had lost interest, but my agent was starting to get stressed. I wasn’t really into anything and then I read Perks of Being a Wallflower, and it’s so beautifully written and so funny. I was incredibly moved by it and just instantly knew A) that the movie had to be made and B) that I had to play Sam. I really wanted to play Sam, and was just really drawn to her, so when I met with Stephen, we just instantly clicked and it felt like was meeting an old friend. Then I met with Logan, and I knew he was the perfect Charlie, and it was just a really obvious, obvious choice for me.
The Cold Light of Day
In this action adventure film, Willis plays Martin, an undercover CIA agent. Henry Cavil plays Martin’s son Will, whose family is kidnapped by intelligence agents during a sailing trip in Spain. Martin reveals to Will that the agents are after a briefcase he took, and when Martin is killed, it is up to Will to find the briefcase, deliver it, and save his family. Shot in Span by French director Mabrouk El Mechri.
Action films…it’s something that is a challenge every time. To make it lifelike. That’s the job…I find that I can make my kids laugh and make my wife laugh much easier than I can ever get them to think…just imagine me jumping off a building. The real test is to make it seem believable.
Looper
In this science fiction action movie, Willis plays a contract killer named Joe. Joe belongs to a group which disposes of problematic citizens by sending them back in time to be killed by a group of people called “loopers”. Joe suddenly finds himself sent back 30 years to the year 2044, where he encounters his younger self – played by co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Old Joe tries to convince young Joe to let him live. Written and Directed by Rian Johnson.
I’m really pleased how well Looper turned out. And I’m really pleased for everyone involved. The actors — and especially for Rian. He knew what he wanted, got the cast he wanted, told the story he wanted and never had to compromise.
Premium Rush
Gordon-Levitt plays a New York City bike messenger named Wilee in this action thriller directed by David Koepp. Along with his fellow bike messenger girlfriend played by actress Dania Ramirez, he gets caught up in a dangerous chase with a dirty cop who wants to get his hands on a valuable delivery. The film also stars Michael Shannon, Jamie Chung, and Aasif Mandvi. On the film’s stunt-filled scenes:
This was the most challenging film I’ve ever done. You’re on a bike the entire movie. You’re having conversations on a phone the entire movie — while you’re riding a bike through New York City.
The Expendables 2
In this sequel to the 2010 action film The Expendables, Willis returns for another appearance as Church, an undercover CIA agent. Church recruits the group of mercenaries known as “The Expendables” to complete a mission. But when one of their members is murdered, they seek revenge and experience the added difficulties that come with operating on enemy turf. Director Simon West:
It was pretty amazing when I had all the big guys together. We looked down the call sheet of the names, and never before have they been all assembled in the same film – let alone in the same scene. I would pinch myself halfway through the day as I was directing Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone and Jean Claude Van-Damme all in the same scene, all fighting, shooting, whatever they were doing. It was an action guys dream come true, really.
Total Recall
Beckinsale plays Lori Quaid in the 2012 remake of Total Recall, alongside actor Colin Farrell, who plays her husband, Douglas Quaid. The film takes place in the future, in a world that is mostly uninhabitable. To escape the hardships of his life, Douglas decides to experience “Rekall,” a process in which any memory can be implanted into one’s head. Shortly after plugging into Rekall, Quaid finds himself in the middle of a worldwide conspiracy where nobody can be trusted. Not even his wife. On her role as Lori:
She’s just a little bit off. She’s come back damaged and wounded and acting out of that place, so it’s fun for an actor.
The Dark Knight Rises
Gordon-Levitt plays John Blake in this final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Blake is a young police officer whose idealism and heroic deeds in solving crime in the city gets him a promotion from Commissioner James Gordon, played by Gary Oldman. The film also features Christian Bale as Batman, Michael Caine as butler Alfred Pennyworth, and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. On his character:
I would call him an idealist. Gotham has become a sort of a cynical place. It’s been eight years since the last movie ended, and Batman is nowhere to be seen, status quo has set in, the rich getting richer, no one asking a lot of questions. But Blake is the kind of guy that will raise his hand and he doesn’t mind ruffling a few feathers.
Katy Perry: Part of Me
Perry releases an autobiographical documentary concert film. The movie titled Katy Perry: Part of Me features exclusive interviews with Perry on her life story and personal events as well as scenes shot from her California Dreams tour. The movie also features Perry speaking on her relationship with Russell Brand and performances of tracks from her album Teenage Dream.
It’s closing the chapter on Teenage Dream, but it’s giving you such an inside perspective. This film, you’re going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you’re going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything.
Magic Mike
Channing Tatum portrays Michael “Magic Mike” Lane, a construction worker turned male stripper in Tampa, Florida who takes on a younger performer as his protege in the American comedy directed by Steven Soderbergh.
We were sitting over a beer and I told [Steven Soderbergh] that I was a stripper for eight months when I was nineteen. I said, ‘I want to make a movie out of it.’ And he said, ‘you should write it.’ And I’m like, ‘yeah Soderbergh, I’ll go write that.’ Cut to three or four months later, I read an interview where he said that he would be willing to direct. I called him up and said, ‘how much bullshit is in this article?’ He was like, ‘I’m as serious as bone’s spur, we should sit down.’ And we sat down . . . at Carney’s over a hot dog ironically enough. And we decided to do it.”
Rock of Ages
Zeta-Jones plays Patricia Whitmore in the film adaptation of the musical Rock of Ages. Set in the eighties, Sherrie and Drew are two young aspiring stars. They meet for the first time in the City of Angels, and decide to pursue their dreams together. Their relationship however, will come across a number of obstacles.
It’s so rewarding doing a musical. It’s hard work. It’s not like doing a Broadway play, which is really hard work … It’s endless shooting a number in a movie because of all of the camera angles and stuff like that.
Rock of Ages
Brand stars in this romantic comedy musical film adaptation of the 2006 Broadway musical. He plays Lonny Barnett, the alcohol-loving manager of the The Bourbon Room and right-hand man of club owner Dennies Dupree (Alec Baldwin). The cast includes Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. On accepting a role in a musical:
I thought it would be fun to sing all those songs, and like one of the films I’ve done before where I had to pretend to be a rock star, I sang songs in that. It’s quite good, like it’s not that difficult if you’ve got a good teacher.
That’s My Boy
Sandler stars in That’s My Boy a film about a middle-aged father who is stuck in the 80’s. The film co-stars Andy Samberg.
It was fun to speak the way I speak in my bathroom. I grew up cursing a lot and it felt natural. And then my parents yelled at me and told me to stop and they weren’t enjoying my albums. They weren’t enjoying a lot of things I did with my life. Then my father passed away and he’s not here to yell at me anymore. So my mother I bully her I say, Here comes some more dirtiness. Sit and enjoy it. And that’s what we did.
Men in Black 3
Smith returns in Men in Black 3. Agent J (Smith) goes back in time to 1969 to prevent Agent K, played by Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin, from being killed by a Boglodite named Boris the Animal. When speaking of his idea to cast someone else as a young K:
You know, what was exciting to me, also, about doing this is how risky and dangerous and almost foolish it was to try to make Men In Black and introduce a new actor to play the, you know…
Moonrise Kingdom
In this offbeat comedy, Willis plays Captain Sharp, the sheriff of a New England island town where the story takes place in 1965. Two twelve-year olds make a pact to run away together and live together for a week in a secret cove they name Moonrise Kingdom. Sheriff Sharp, the girl’s parents, a scout troupe, and a social services rep all hunt for the missing couple. Directed by Wes Anderson.
It seems like a simple story about kids falling in love, but there’s also a more complex story about what’s going on ith the adults…it really addresses big issues, big family stuff. I’m not sure if it’s meant to be taken as seriously as you can read into it, but I took it very seriously.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Portman reprises her role as Padmé Amidala in the second installment of the Star Wars prequel series. Episode II takes place a decade after the previous The Phantom Menace. An assassination attempt has been made on Senator Amidala, and a now matured Anakin is assigned to protect her. On her Star Wars fame:
I really wasn’t aware of how big a deal ‘Star Wars’ was… and when I saw the films, I really liked them, but I still didn’t really understand how many … were passionate fans of this film.
Get the Gringo
In this drama, directed by Adrian Grunberg, Gibson plays as a career criminal nabbed by Mexican authorities. He is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a young boy. Co-starring Kevin Hernandez and Daniel Giménez Cacho. Grunberg:
There are elements of Mel in there—especially the comedic elements, which are very Mel. You never know what this guy has been through in the movie. You know, we never tell you what he’s done in the past. It doesn’t really matter because he redeems himself in the end.
The Hunger Games
Lawrence plays Katniss Everdeen, in the futuristic, dystopian film, The Hunger Games. In order to save her sister’s life, Lawrence’s character volunteers to participate in the deadly televised, Hunger Games.
