Mike Nichols dies age 83
Nichols dies of a heart attack at the age of 83. Nichols is survived by his wife, ABC News anchor, Diane Sawyer. ABC News president James Goldston’s statement:
He was a true visionary, winning the highest honors in the arts for his work as a director, writer, producer and comic, and was one of a tiny few to win the EGOT – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – in his lifetime. No one was more passionate about his craft than Mike.
Martin Salia dies from Ebola
Salia dies at Nebraska Medical Center while being treated for Ebola. Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the hospital’s biocontainment unit:

Knowles, Ferguson marry

Peter Kassig beheaded
ISIS releases a video showing the beheading of a dozen Syrian soldiers that ends with a militant standing over a severed head he says belongs to Kassig. U.S. officials said they are working to determine the video’s authenticity. The main militant has a British accent (although the video appears to have been distorted to hide the speaker’s identity) and warns that U.S. soldiers will meet a similar fate.

The militant claims Kassig was killed because he “fought against the Muslims in Iraq, while serving as a soldier”. Kassig’s family says it is awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
The family respectfully asks that the news media avoid playing into the hostage takers’ hands and refrain from publishing or broadcasting photographs or video distributed by the hostage takers. We prefer our son is written about and remembered for his important work and the love he shared with friends and family, not in the manner the hostage takers would use to manipulate Americans and further their cause.
Diem Brown dies at the age of 32
DiemBrown dies at the age of 32 after a lengthy battle with cancer. MTV pays tribute to its reality star in the following statement:

Why Silicon Valley Works
In an op-ed for the Financial Times, Altman describes how Silicon Valley supports startups.
Silicon Valley works because there is such a high density of people working on start-ups and they are inclined to help each other. Other tech hubs have this as well but this is a case of Metcalfe’s law – the utility of a network is proportional to the square of the number of nodes on the network. Silicon Valley has far more nodes in the network than anywhere else.
He also says that Silicon Valley can be replicated elsewhere and is “probably doable with a few thousand people and a reasonable amount of capital.” He says would-be Silicon Valleys should focus on two things: an area where the majority of people care most about start-ups and technology, and on long-term compensation.
A focus on making a lot of money in the long term at the expense of short-term opportunities is essential to building companies that have a huge impact – they take a long time.

Killed in Syria
Hassan is the fourth person from Portsmouth killed while fighting for ISIS. Chairman of the Portsmouth Jami Mosque, Abdul Jalil:

Confirmed dead
Davis is identified as the Placer County deputy who has died. He would have been 43 years old next Wednesday. His father, Michael David Sr., was killed on the same day 26 years earlier, also in the line of duty. He was a 10-year veteran of the Homicide squad. Placer County Sheriff Bonner:

I am incredibly proud of the men and woman who go out there every day and put their lives on the line. Michael David Davis Sr. died Oct. 24, 1988 during a joint drug smuggling investigation when the helicopter he was in crashed into the mountainous area of western Imperial County, according to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department.
