Format names inside posts

In general, we don’t use people’s full name in posts. This is to avoid having to read the person’s full name over and over when reading through a newsline. Check out existing newslines to see how this works.

The rules for adding last names are generally dependent on whether the person’s name is also added as a category to the post. If the person is named in a category you should use their last name only.

Category: George Clooney
In the post write: Clooney wins an Oscar

If there is going to be confusion of last names, usually between family members then use first names.

Categories: Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian.
In the post write: Kim and Khloe pose for a selfie.

Categories: Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Kylie Jenner.
In the post write: Kim, Khloe and Jenner pose for a selfie

For pregnancy or divorce posts we add both names as a category and refer to them as a couple in the post.

The Trumps divorce after ten years. The Duggars are pregnant.

We don’t have to add categories for everyone in a post. If the person is a bystander in the post and doesn’t have a category, then we can use their full name.

Pitt and Jolie get married. The wedding is attended by George Clooney and Matt Damon.

Aniston’s party is attended by Elton John and Billy Joel.

Movie post co-stars are referred to by their full names.

Damon appears in Interstellar. Co-starring Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine

Anyone who speaks should generally have a category

Pitt and Jolie get married. The wedding is attended by George Clooney, Matt Damon. Affleck: They are a great couple.

If a person is a minor person we do not need to add a category. We don’t need to say their name in the post.

  • An artist’s representative
  • A spokesperson
  • A minor official
  • The deputy undersecretary
  • Non-celebrity attorneys
  • Very minor politicians

If in doubt do a quick Google search. Anyone on Wikipedia should have a category on Newslines. If the person has multiple distinct news items about them on Google then they can have a category, but it may be easier just to use their full nmae, or not mention their name. Use Source, Rep, Attorney, Opponent, Official, Board Member.
