Actually that is the one thing that kept me grounded to her and connected to her, because there was so much about her I didn’t identify with. But her love and her commitment to her son and certainly, having lost her own family to this world of the CIA and now her husband And the fear that her son would get involved in this kind of dangerous, silent world and that becoming a reality, and how that would feel. So, yeah, in particular fighting for him – it was very personal.

It was uncomfortable as an actor to portray this man in front of an African crew in locations like Mozambique where there was a tremendous amount of poverty. Mozambique is a country that is having an economic resurgence, but 4 out of 10 people supposedly have HIV or AIDS. It’s an astounding [number].

I think it depicts war for what it really is. These guys are now like brothers. They go off, they fight, their best friend dies right next to them. They don’t have time to cry about it, they gotta push forward…What the story’s really about is the unsung heroes, the guys that raised the first flag – all of whom were basically killed by the time that famous photograph made it back to the States.

All her life she has been desperately in love with the son of the local doctor, and she believes that she craves his mind, unable to acknowledge that what she is really feeling is lust.

Yeah but it’s only Armistead about 20 per cent, like it’s only Armistead in that there’s somewhat of a southern accent. Armistead is very elegant man, a very articulate man, in San Francisco he is like our second mayor. It’s like the idea of having him and that kind of persona of Armistead and then it’s this other guy. So I wasn’t doing an impression of Armistead. I was just taking a little bit of him for a base.
