A buddy of mine told me about a friend of ours who was in the hospital and wasn’t doing well at all. After I hung up with him, I talked to the guy and asked how he was doing. He was in his last days, and I asked him where his wife was. He said he told her to go home, that there was nothing she could do there. That title came to mind, and that little story, the outline of it.
Don [Sampson] and I had started a song the week before that we were going to finish, but Don said, ‘Shoot, let’s write this instead of that other one.’ We finished it in one day. That afternoon, I went to town to play it for one of my song pluggers down there, Cris Lacy. She hears a million songs, and I looked up at her afterwards, and she had tears down her face. I told Don, ‘I think we have something if it got through Cris Lacy’s hard shell.’ About a week later, somebody at Brad Paisley’s company played it for him, and he put it on hold, and the rest is history.

It’s fun and light-hearted, and it feels like summer. And where Stay left off with just a guitar and a vocal, this starts off with just a guitar and a vocal. Obviously it kicks in, so you can move yourself around and dance. But I think it’s sort of a nice juxtaposition, but also it shows a bit of an evolution.

I met a guy at an after-party and asked him his last name 3 times, but it never stuck. He got my number, we talked a few times, and I didn’t know what his last name was. I was way past the point where I should have known his last name, and if I asked him, I knew it would offend him.

I really enjoy writing with Justin. We had psychoanalytic sessions whenever we wrote songs first. We’d sit down and we’d start talking about situations. And then we’d start talking about issues or problems or relationships with people. That was the only way, because you know, writing together with somebody is very intimate. That was fun, because he’s open and he’s got talent. He’s a songwriter. I haven’t worked with a lot of songwriters where I’m instantly connected and start riffing and playing with the rhythm of the words. He’s as interested in the rhythm of the words as the meaning of the words.

I think the simple message of that song is what attracted me to Every Day. It’s one of those simple yet profound lyrics. When you hear that chorus and he says, ‘Every day you save my life,’ it hits you like a ton of bricks. There are so many people that come in and out of your life that you feel that way about. So many people have stood behind me for so long. I immediately thought of my mom and how encouraging she was to me over the years, struggling in Nashville, and I wanted to give up and come back home and get an ordinary job somewhere. That song really moved me when I thought about those people that are in my life that I lean on so heavily. My wife, my family, it’s just a really great song.

I think girls can relate to the song because basically it’s about just being mad. And it’s OK to be mad after a breakup or after something goes wrong with a relationship. It’s just like completely, brutally honest. It’s also kind of funny. It’s got a comedic edge to it.
