Gunpowder and Lead
The country singer’s first top 10 hit single Gunpowder and Lead tells a story about a woman who is sitting with a gun and waiting for her abusive man to come home from jail. The song was inspired by the abused women that Lambert’s family would take in, in particular, one woman who came in crying with a black eye.
Some people are like, Ugh! I can’t believe she’s singing that! And it’s meant to be taken light-hearted in some aspects, but this song is also very real to me … When I was younger, my parents took in abused women and their kids, so I saw first-hand what damage it can do to a family to be in an abusive relationship.
Small Town Southern Man
Jackson releases his single, Small Town Southern Man, from his album, Good Time. Jackson:
I think sometimes you sit down and try to write something and think, ‘Well, this may make a good single,’ and you’re trying to do something for your career. But most of the time, I write what comes out or I have ideas I’ve scribbled down over the past year or two. I had Small Town Southern Man written down, and I’ll just pick that up and start writing it. I don’t know that I sit down and try to designate each song for something special. Just write each one and pick the ones you like. I’ve always tried to mix it up on an album where there’s some up-tempo things and some mid-tempo kind of cool songs – some real love ballads that are pretty. Heavy broken-heart songs and drinking songs and just a little of everything. You know, that’s kind of the way country music’s always been.
All-American Girl
The artist releases, All-American Girl, from, Carnival Ride.
Years ago I got together with a voice coach briefly and I hated it, because I felt like they tried to change things that, like, would make me me, you know? There’s been a lot of growth over the past two years. I think I sound different now. I’ve gotten a lot more practice and everything’s just gotten easier. Like, notes that I could barely hit for the first album – like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is gonna kill me’ – are a piece of cake now. We’re on to new notes now that are way in the stratosphere. On All-American Girl, the high note is the highest I’ve ever hit.
Helpless When She Smiles
The band releases their single, Helpless When She Smiles, from Unbreakable. McLean:
It’s the epitome of, you know, Backstreet Boys. I mean, great harmonies, it’s a great song, great love song. It’s timeless. And I think it’s just one of those songs that will be around forever.

She was in a really good head-space and open to trying new things, and I wanted to try some new things with her too. It kind of was a great celebration of trusting one another. … Now we’re sort of both seasoned in our own rights, so it’s like two people coming back together, trying to do something fresh and new … seeking out an actual different technique and stylistic choices and trying to find a form to celebrate them in.

There’s a line in the song that says, ‘And you should really thank Mrs. Brinkman.’ She was – and still is – the speech teacher at John Marshall High School. She told me, ‘You have to take this class.
