Fourth GOP debate
Trump takes part in the fourth GOP debate, in Milwaukee, WI, where he expands on his plan to deport illegal immigrants.
We will have a wall. The wall will be built. The wall will be successful…We’re a country of laws. We either have a country or we don’t have a country? Let me just tell you that Dwight Eisenhower, good president, great president, people liked him. “I like Ike,” right? The expression. “I like Ike.” Moved a 1.5 million illegal immigrants out of this country, moved them just beyond the border. They came back. Moved them again beyond the border, they came back. Didn’t like it. Moved them way south. They never came back.
He also criticizes Fiorina saying:
Why is she always interrupting people?”
Obama, Netanyahu meet
Minister Netanyahu meets with President Obama about the security of Israel. President Obama says that Israel’s security is a primary focus of his administration and he’s committed to using the resources of the United States to help keep Israel safe.
As I’ve said repeatedly, the security of Israel is one of my top foreign policy priorities and that has expressed itself not only in words but in deeds. We have closer military intelligence cooperation than any two administrations in history. The military assistance that we provide we consider not only an important part of our obligation to the security of the state of Israel but also an important part of US security infrastructure in the region as we make sure that one of our closest allies can not only protect itself but can also work with us in deterring terrorism and other security threats.
Prime Minister Netanyahu also expresses his appreciation of the strong bond that exists between the United States and Israel.
We’re with each other in more ways than one and I want to thank you for this opportunity to strengthen our friendship which is strong and strengthen our alliance which is strong.
Valencia Test Day 1
Rossi tests out the 2016 Yamaha M1 with new electronics and Michelin tires at Valencia. His best time of 1’32.401 puts him in twelfth place.
It‘s a big change and it will be interesting, especially the tyre will make a big difference for next year. A lot changed, especially the setting, the weight distribution of the bike and everything. It looks like our competitors are a little ahead, because they‘ve made more kilometres with the Michelin, but it‘s just the first day. I also tried the new electronics and also that, as I expected, was quite a big step because it‘s like going a little bit into the past. However, that too could be interesting and it‘s only the first day, we have a lot to work on. The rear tyre is very similar and Michelin is good, it has very good grip. The front is the big difference.
Elba to open Berlin tour date
Madonna announces that Elba will be the opening act for the Berlin stop on her Rebel Heart tour.
Rossi claims Spanish ‘stitch up’
Rossi says he was denied his win by a Spanish ‘stitch-up’’. Rossi say Lorenzo is a deserving champion but he could not understand why Honda should want to see a Yamaha rider win. He accuses Márquez of being a ‘biscottone’ – an expression used in football when two teams play out a mutually beneficial draw to the detriment of another – but said he expected no less.
I did what I could but it was a strange situation having Márquez as the bodyguard of Lorenzo. It is embarrassing for the sport. Hopefully the sport’s authorities will be able to sort it out. It is an ugly end to what has been an attractive championship. It has not been a true championship and this should not happen in sport.
Márquez responds that it is ‘a lack of respect’ to suggest he had not tried to win:
I always give everything and I know there will be people that will say that I have been second because I wanted Lorenzo to win.
Lorenzo, however, says that the Spaniards may have helped each other:
The fact that they knew what I was going for and that they are Spanish has helped me and in another race they may have tried everything to overtake. Dani did well because he could have tried a crazy overtake. We are Spanish and the title remains in Spain. If it had been in Italy and with two Italians behind Rossi then it would have been the same.
Explains why he turned down reboot
Moranis explains why he turned down appearing in the new all-female Ghostbusters reboot:
I wish them well. I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?..I took a break, which turned into a longer break. But I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role, and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it. [But Ghostbusters] didn’t appeal to me.
Second on grid, will challenge Lorenzo
After final free practice, Marquez will be second on the grid at Valencia, after Lorenzo. Rossi will start at the back of the grid. Asked about whether he would challenge Lorenzo in the final lap:
It will be interesting to arrive in the final lap like this. But if I see the space and it’s clear, I will try [to pass], because in the end the best way to finish the season is with a victory. Like in Australia, if there is a lot of risk, we will see. If it’s a closing gap or a small space, I will try.
However, Marquez says Honda is currently struggling for long-run pace compared to Lorenzo, as high temperatures are causing problems with tyre overheating.
Nobody expected this temperature. We are struggling there. We’ve tried to change the balance of the bike to avoid these problems, but when you avoid a problem, another one is coming. We’ve tried to manage well but they say tomorrow will be a little bit colder and maybe that will help us.
Apology in South Africa

South African H&M issues an apology after the backlash from a series of tweets implying that white models have a more positive image. The chain clarifies they did not intend to offend anyone.
In no way does H&M state that positivity is linked to an ethnic group. H&M is proudly a global brand that embraces all people who are inspired by fashion, regardless of ethnic background, gender or culture. We wish to [apologize] if our message has caused [offense] in any way as this was not the intention.
Turned down Super Bowl performance
In am interview with Le Batard, Big Boi says that he and Andre 3000 were asked to perform during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, but Andre 3000 turned down the opportunity when he was told that they would not be able to perform two songs in full.
He didn’t want to cut the songs. He wanted to do both songs. They was like, ‘Y’all can’t do it.’
Big Boi says he tried to convince André to change his mind, and that he and Andre both laugh about it.
Criticizes Kardashians
In an interview with HuffPost Live, Gunn talks about the Kardashians and Kanye West. On West’s clothing line:
I think they’re a bunch of dumb clothes. Just basic pieces…He won’t [like that comment], but let me tell you, the whole Kardashian clan doesn’t like me, so no surprise there…There are large issues [with the Kardashians] for me, such as why? Why! But when it comes to fashion I say to people all the time, if you want guidance in fashion, just consider this: if a Kardashian is wearing it, don’t… I think it’s vulgar… Given the amount of public exposure that the Kardashians have to potentially be sending the message to people that you too can dress like this, no!
On Kendall Jenner:
I think absolutely nothing [of her] to be perfectly honest. And I’m assuming there’s a huge, perhaps million dollars a month, publicity wagon that is pulling these girls along and creating these lives for them. I’m distrustful of it and I find it all distasteful. [But] I shouldn’t say that she doesn’t [have ‘it’]. I don’t know her — she may be a perfectly lovely young woman. I just feel that she’s tainted by the Kardashian aura of yuck!
Adventure of a Lifetime audio release
Coldplay release the audio for Adventure of a Lifetime, from their album, A Head Full of Dreams. The band says they have collaborated with Tove Lo, Noel Gallagher and Beyonce on the album, which will contain 12 songs, including a hidden track, X Marks The Spot. Parlophone:
Revitalized, they’ve made an album that’s bursting with energy, colour and big, life-affirming moments such as the deliciously ebullient first single Adventure of a Lifetime and the rocket-powered Hymn for the Weekend. Coldplay has never enjoyed making a record more than this one. Nor have they been happier with the results.
Second after free practice
Marquez has the fastest time in FP1, and is fifth in FP2, leaving him second overall. The Honda team is experimenting with a variety of tyres and different settings. He says the Hondas are especially hard on the front tyre, but that he is feeling confident on used tyres when running the hardest option.
I’m happy because I went out on track and got back to enjoying myself riding; it was important and something I was really looking forward to doing. It’s been a positive day because we did a good job with the setup of the bike. In the second session we worked hard with Sunday’s race in mind, riding with used tyres and also testing the hardest compound. We are pretty clear about how we can continue to improve tomorrow, because the track temperature increased a lot and if it stays like this, we will have to concentrate on the durability of the tyres.
Relaxed, happy with practice
After coming fifth in FP1 and fourth in FP2, Rossi says he is relaxed about Valencia practice.
I’m not working any differently; we did something very similar to what we always do. I’m very relaxed and I’m quite happy with today’s two practice sessions because my pace in the morning wasn’t bad and I was pretty competitive with the used tyres. I’m also pleased that in the afternoon we tried something different that allowed me to up the pace and improve my lap times. I used the hard tyres, which wasn’t so bad, and after I tried the soft to make a comparison and make the right choice for Sunday. If we do a good job with the set-up that could make things less difficult, but Valencia is a tough track for making up ground because it’s pretty narrow. On top of that, we’re not especially quick on the straights, our top speed isn’t that high, so we have to work hard in other areas, like the braking, to get the set-up right…The start is vital in MotoGP. It accounts for, say, 80% of the race, but Sunday will be a bit different for me, because I’ll have traffic ahead of me and I’ll have to have the energy and momentum to keep up the pace from beginning to end.
‘Impossible engine’ works in tests
NASA conducts more tests of its ‘impossible engine’, and the first public update in months suggests fuel-free thrusters do work — but they don’t know why. Paul March, one of the top engineers working the EM Drive thruster at the Eagleworks Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Texas, posts the update on the NASA Spaceflight forum in response to a claim the unaccounted thrust is generated by something known as the Lorentz force, a force that is exerted by a magnetic field on a moving electric charge. March says his tests prove this is not true.
I will tell you that we first built and installed a second generation, closed face magnetic damper that reduced the stray magnetic fields in the vacuum chamber by at least an order of magnitude and any Lorentz force interactions it could produce, and yet the anomalous thrust signals remain.
March says they have managed to remove some of the errors from earlier tests – but still found signals of unexplained thrust.
Regrets going wide
Marquez says he regrets going wide at Sepang, but that it’s time to move on.
Unfortunately I don’t have any other choice. I just regret going wide and not to follow my normal line. Except for that, it’s better that we speak about this weekend…It’s been a difficult week after what happened in Sepang but I’ve tried my best to put it behind me and concentrate on my training and looking forward to the final race of the season. We want to finish on a high note so we will work hard from Friday to get the bike setup well and give ourselves the best chance for the race. I’ve had mixed results here in the past but I enjoy racing here in front of the home fans. I hope the events of the past week can be put behind us and we can focus on the race.
ISIS releases video claiming revenge
Five ISIS jihadists are seen in a video praising militants in the Sinai Peninsula for allegedly bringing down the Russian A321 passenger jet with 224 people on board. A Slavic-looking man wielding a knife, speaking both in Russian and Arabic, addresses President Vladimir Putin, warning the Russian leader that he would regret targeting ISIS in Syria. He threatens to continue taking down planes, invading countries, and killing people in retaliation for Russia’s military operation in Syria. Russia and Egypt say the group doesn’t possess the means to shoot down a plane.
Still believes Pyramid theory
Carson comments on his 1998 Andrews University commencement speech where he said that his personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain.
It’s still my belief, yes…the pyramids were made in a way that they had hermetically sealed compartments….You would need that if you were trying to preserve grain for a long period of time.
His comments then:
Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain…And various of scientists have said, ‘Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how–‘ you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you.
U.S.: ISIS bomb downed Russian plane
U.S. officials claim there is significant evidence that a bomb brought down Russia’s plane over the Sinai Peninsula and U.S. investigators are focusing on ISIS operatives or sympathizers as the likely bombers. U.S. officials stress that while they believe it’s ‘likely’ that a bomb was on the plane, it’s still too early to conclude that for certain, and mechanical failure remains a possibility.
Downed Russian plane claim
The Sinai branch post an audio message on terror-related social media accounts insisting ISIS brought down the Russian plane in Egypt. The message is believed to carry the voice of Wilayat Sinai’s Abu Osama al-Masri, who has made recordings for the group in the past. In it, Masri claims the group will reveal ‘soon’ how they downed the plane, and points out the fact the crash occurred a year after the group first pledged its allegiance to Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Find your black boxes and analyze them, give us the results of your investigation and the depth of your expertise and prove we didn’t do it or how it was downed… Die with your rage. We are the ones with God’s blessing who brought it down. And God willing, one day we will reveal how, at the time we desire.
