UN Goodwill Ambassador

Announcement0 Comments

UN Women, the UN’s gender-equality entity, names Watson the new Goodwill Ambassador. Watson will work on the organization’s women’s-empowerment campaign, HeForShe, and is the first to be appointed under the leadership of Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Under Secretary-General and executive director of U.N. Women. Mlambo-Ngcuka believes that Watson’s “intellect and passion” embodies the values of U.N. Women, and that her experience promoting girls’ education in countries such as Bangladesh and Zambia, will help spread the organization’s mission.

Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting.  I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role.

Named co-presidents

Erving and Stiklorius are named co-presidents of Atom Factory by Carter. Carter:

J and I have a long history, dating back to 2000 when we co-founded Erving Wonder Management. He has proven to be an exceptional deal maker and music manager. Ty has been an incredible addition to the team.  Her strategic thinking and creativity has given the company and our clients a tremendous amount of added value.  I’m looking forward to having the two of them help grow and scale our management business.

Erving:

Troy and I both grew up in Philly and have been friends since early on in our careers. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and what he has accomplished, and I am looking forward to adding value to the Atom Factory platform; whether it is in branding, technology, or management.

Stiklorius:

Atom Factory provides an innovative and creative platform for artists to thrive in, and I am pleased to partner with Troy and J to help lead the company in continuing to push the boundaries of what a forward-thinking artist management company can be.

Signs with Astralwerks

Robinson signs with Astralwerks to release his debut LP via the label’s Capitol imprint in the U.S. and via Virgin EMI UK. He joins a roster that includes Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, and Deadmau5:

The thing that was most critical for us in deciding which home to have was that they get the vision. There are a lot of labels out there that want to have the next big EDM thing and that’s totally not what the album is about at all. It kind of lives more in the alternative space than in the dance world. I needed a team of people who had experience with both worlds.

Signs Carter as manager

Stirling signs Carter as her manager. Carter first discovers Stirling through Atom Factory’s Stiklorius, who encourages her boss to check out Stirling’s YouTube channel. He flies to Orlando, FL., to check out one of her gigs, and is impressed by her ability to sell out a 1,200-seat venue without any mainstream radio support. Stirling has more than 2 million YouTube subscribers, a sold-out European tour and has sold 108,000 copies of her self-titled, self-released album. Carter:

By looking at the numbers, automatically you could see this girl knew how to move the needle and understood YouTube was a venue to engage fans both online and offline.

Several companies had approached Stirling about representation:

After every other meeting I remember feeling so confused. But with Atom Factory, they were up to date on current things and trying new stuff all the time, and I felt so creatively alive when I met with them.

According to the publisher, the book is slated to cover love, friendship, and “frank and funny advice on everything from sex to eating to traveling to work.”

Hires Carter as manager

Chopra hires Carter as her manager. Carter:

She’s a triple threat—she has the ability to sing, dance, and act which is a rare trait amongst artists. She will be the first bonafide pop artist to come directly out of India. The primary plan is to let the music speak for itself. Priyanka and Red One made a great record that we think will stand on its own. People won’t buy the music just because she is who she is. We want them to buy it because it’s good. PC’s strength is her work ethic. She’s one of the hardest working artists that I know. I was really impressed by the level of dedication she’s given to the recording process. She’s approached it in a manner that a seasoned artist would approach it.

Enlists Nas for RapGenius

Carter helps enlist Nas to become RapGenius’ first verified rapper. Carter:

Our thinking was, ‘You get Nas and a lot of people are going to follow. He’s going to be able to give you great advice on the product. He built so much credibility on the rap side, that now people are annotating presidential speeches, Shakespearean plays, country lyrics. Our bet, and Andreessen Horowitz’s bet now, is that after a few months people are going to be able to utilize the site for just about anything.

Grand Hustle Records signs Iggy Azalea stealing her away from Interscope Records. Iggy is one of three artist contracted with the Grand Hustle label. Azelea says:

Tip reached out just to meet me, to say hello, and I found a position for him, conveniently, where he could be used. And he was down with it; that’s the truth.

T.I. recalls their conversation:

I think her exact words were: ‘It’s very smart of you to call me because I’m going to be smashing sh– for quite some time now and no one will be able to breathe if they’re not on my team. So it’s good that you’ll be here, so you’ll have oxygen.

Azalea confirms

Yaccarino hired by NBCUniversal

A week after leving Turner, Yaccarino is hired as President, Cable Entertainment & Digital Advertising Sales at NBCUniversal. Yaccarino takes responsibility for all cable entertainment and digital advertising sales for the company including USA, Syfy, Bravo Media, E! Entertainment, Oxygen Media, Style, G4, Sprout, Chiller, Cloo and their respective digital platforms. Additionally, Yaccarino will oversee the sales efforts for NBC.com, AccessHollywood.com, NBCSports.com, NBCOlympics.com and GolfChannel.com and the stand alone digital businesses DailyCandy, Swirl, Fandango, iVillage and Television Without Pity. Company:

Linda has a proven track record in driving commercial success through industry-leading innovations and creative strategic marketing solutions for her clients.

in 2016, Yaccarino described her first year at NBCU:

The first year at NBCUniversal was the hardest year I have ever had in my entire career. I was hired to come and head up an entire sales and marketing department. But I was also hired to transform the company. [There were 15 different sales teams]and they were rigidly siloed and they were almost allergic to collaboration. I believe [the ad sales system] was invented by Scooby-Doo. It was held together with duct tape and paper clips…The compensation plan, I quickly dubbed the sales prevention plan. Incentives were all out of whack. Compared to our competitors, we were about a decade behind…Anyone ever watch that show Naked and Afraid? I felt like that every day. I didn’t know where to start. I was pretty sure I wasn’t ready…I was hired to transform the company and it didn’t matter if I was ready or not. I learned really quickly that if I was going to be successful transforming this company, I was going to have to get used to being lonely. Because I was never more lonely than when I managed over 1,000 people.
