Funeral
The public funeral starts at 9:08 am in London, when the tenor bell sounds to signal the departure of the cortege from Kensington Palace. Diana’s coffin is carried from the palace on a gun carriage, along Hyde Park to St. James’ Palace. The official ceremony is held at Westminster Abbey, with 2000 people attending, and finishes at the resting place in Althorp. A Palace spokeswoman says: Although there is no lying in state, obviously we want to ensure that as many of the public who wish to can share in the grieving.
Two thousand people attend the ceremony in Westminster Abbey. As the hearse drove the 77 miles to Diana’s final resting place, so many people threw flowers onto the car that the driver uses his windscreen wipers to keep a clear view.
Diana’s brother Charles Earl Spencer delivers a eulogy:
I stand before you today the representative of a family in grief, in a country in mourning before a world in shock…We, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition but can sing openly as you planned.
Elton John sings a revamped version of his 1974 hit Candle In the Wind, which was originally written as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The song begins with the line “Goodbye, England’s rose, may you ever grow in our hearts.”

Princess Mononoke
Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s most expensive movie, Princess Mononoke, is released. The story follows a young warrior as he is entangled in a conflict between nature and humanity’s industrious ambitions.
I think I really exhausted the animation staff with this film. I knew that was gonna happen, but felt that we had to do this. But when I finished, I didn’t understand it: “What did I make?!” At first I decided, “This is something children shouldn’t see,” but in the end I realised,”‘No, this is something that children must see,” because adults, they didn’t get it — children understood it.
Rowe, Jackson marry
Rowe and Jackson marry in Australia while he is on HIStory World Tour concerts at the SCG. Rowe is six-months pregnant with their first child during the ceremony. Rowe:
To prevent some of the taboo of a child out of wedlock. The kids were going to have it hard enough as it was, and they didn’t need to have that label upon them like their father has had so many placed upon him, they shouldn’t.

Mugabe, Marufu marry
Mugabe marries Grace Marufu in a Catholic mass, in Kutama, 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Harare. The church wedding has been criticised by some Catholic leaders, who argue Christian doctrines brand polygamy as adultery. President Chissano of Mozambique is best man. After the three-hour ceremony the couple emerge from the church to thousands of well wishers singing and and cheering. Nelson Mandela and leaders from Botswana and Namibia attend the reception.

Jackson’s Los Angeles publicist, Lee Solters, confirms the separation saying in a statement that the couple had “mutually agreed to go their separate ways. However, they remain good friends.”
Donates papers
Bond donates correspondence to the Auburn Avenue Research Library in Atlanta. The collection covers the period from 1969 to 1996 and contains correspondence, organizational and institutional material related to the Voter Education Project, Political Associates, and The Southern Elections Fund, includes speeches, political ephemera, articles, poetry and a book written by Bond, as well as items relating to African American political life.
Family moves to United States

Becomes SNL head writer
McKay becomes head writer on the SNL staff. During this time, he and Ferrell create the recurring “Bill Brasky” sketches, which also feature Goodman and Baldwin.
We got this through simply because the first one did work really well, and everyone was going, “Are these hit characters?” But then, it was far too strange to be hit characters. But it was mainly John Goodman and Alec Baldwin are the sole reason we got to do a bunch of these ’cause every time they would show up, they would go, “Are we doing a Brasky?” And I could see Lorne and the other producers kind of roll their eyes like, “I guess we’re doing a Brasky.” That was how we got those on.

Reno is diagnosed with Parkinson’s two years into her term, after realizing something might be wrong with her left hand.
I noticed a tremor in my early-morning walks around the Capitol. At first it was just a faint twitch, but it got progressively worse, and so I went to the doctor. He asked me some questions, examined me, and told me that I had Parkinson’s and that I’d be fine for 20 years…I went to the bookstore and got as many books as I could find. I read, and then after talking with my family and friends, I told my doctor that I wanted to make a full statement about it and have him available to answer questions….I made sure that I told the President [Bill Clinton] and everyone else that they should be honest with me if they thought I wasn’t able to serve. He was very supportive. Then I just moved ahead. I made a decision to continue doing my job.
