Release beheading video

TV Appearance0 Comments

Boko Haram releases a video of a uniformed man – believed to be a police officer – being handcuffed, held at gunpoint and beheaded. The footage – released by terrorist operating in the north of Nigeria – also shows militants attacking an army barracks. The eight-minute video clip, shared on social media, is recorded in a similar style to videos released by ISIS. The video shows intense firefights in the day and night time on army barracks in Borno and Yobe. The extremists are filmed carrying AK-47s and are backed up by tanks and heavy weaponry. The footage cuts to a scene with a man dressed in uniform – believed to be a policeman – who is then held down and beheaded by three jihadis. An unidentified fighter, shown in the video with looted army weapons and ammunition, and an ISIS flag, says the footage shows Nigeria’s military has not forced Boko Haram from its positions and got them hemmed into the Sambisa Forest, as the military has claimed.

7 Women, 7 Sins

Sulkowicz art wrathSulkowicz participates in 7 Women, 7 Sins, a group art show at Brooklyn’s Kunstraum LLC, where Sulkowicz’s work represents “wrath”.  Her work consists of New York Times pages overlaid with drawings that question the content. A self-portrait in which her face is covered by her hands, covers a Times story about her, with text that reads, “you can take my story, but my body won’t be overwritten.” In another piece a drawing of a man holding his erect penis obscures an ad for Tiffany’s diamonds featuring a couple ice skating in Central Park. Sulkowicz’s text reads: “Fuck her. Believe this.” Curator Marcin:

Emma’s contributions confront us with a clear message: ‘You lost humans. Don’t judge. Listen to your inner self. Stop walking like a blind bird towards the cat. Now, consumption is at its highest peak; we are submissive. Emma makes her ‘rape’ purposely consumable and, therefore, attacks consumption at its most evil vein—the formation of inhumanity and our ill, irresponsible participation. She ‘rapes’ us and our judgment with a healthy dose of consciousness.

Fifth video released

TV Appearance0 Comments

The Center for Medical Progress releases a fifth video, reportedly filmed in April at a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas. The video shows a woman identified as Melissa Farrell, director of research for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, discusses changing abortion procedures based on the requirements of the fetal tissue buyers.

And we’ve had studies in which the company, or in the case of the investigator, has a specific need for a certain portion of the products of conception and we bake that into our contract, and our protocol, that we follow this. So we deviate from our standard in order to do that. If we alter our process and we are able to obtain intact fetal cadavers, then we can make it part of the budget, that any dissections are this, and splitting the specimens into different shipments is this. I mean, it’s all just a matter of line items.

The video also shows the “buyers” sifting through fetal tissue and pulling out lungs and intestines.

Planned Parenthood:

The footage released today doesn’t show Planned Parenthood staff engaged in any wrongdoing or agreeing to violate any legal or medical standards,” Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens said in a six-paragraph statement. Instead, the latest tape shows an extremely offensive intrusion and lack of respect for women, with footage of medical tissue in a lab. These extremists show a total lack of compassion and dignity for women’s most personal medical decisions.

Claims allies have lost confidence

Gives Talk0 Comments

MDC-T President Tsvangirai says Zanu PF is now in a dilemma as its ‘all-weather’ allies – the Chinese and Russians – have lost confidence in the party’s leadership under President Mugabe.

Zanu PF is in serious crisis because no investor across the world takes them seriously. Even the Chinese and Russians no longer trust them; that is why they are sceptical about investing in the country. What Zanu PF has only achieved is promoting politics of impunity, killing and destroying the economy and the once vibrant agricultural sector.

Tsvangirai tells supporters that his party will not boycott elections but will only take part in an election which will produce credible results.

We will only take part in an election which is conducted in a free and fair environment. We want a situation where, if Zanu PF wins the elections we shake their hands and say congratulations, and if MDC wins then they accept because change is imminent. We cannot take part in an election where the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission cannot run an independent process and is, instead, controlled by Zanu PF…We are still committed to peaceful means of taking power. Change is imminent now because people have suffered enough and they want change of political leadership.

We went into the GNU to save Zimbabweans and, later, Zanu PF decided to rule on their own but where is the country? Everything has virtually collapsed. We heard some of Zanu PF officials saying their party will rule forever; let them rule then.

Black Mass interview

Film Appearance0 Comments

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cooper talks about Depp’s performance as Bulger in Black Mass. To re-create Bulger’s intimidating style and persona, Cooper and Depp pored over surveillance tapes and old FBI photographs. Cooper says of Bulger:

He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra – you never knew where he could strike…He murdered him in front of numerous witnesses in broad daylight. In a word, Whitey was brazen.

Of Depp:

A lot of people on set knew Whitey intimately. They got chills at the resemblance. Some of them couldn’t even look at him… It’s easy to be the mustache twirling villain but this performance couldn’t be further from that. He is truly gifted.

Listen to Me Marlon

Trailer0 Comments

Riley directs Listen to Me Marlon, a documentary that features musings taken from more than 300 hours of Brando’s self-recorded audio tapes that the actor had made as preparation for his official biography. The documentary begins in Brando’s childhood, revisiting the actor’s tough relationship with his alcoholic mother and abusive father. It includes his thoughts on films such as Apocalypse Now (he calls early drafts of the script “stupid” and “awful) and Last Tango in Paris (“I realized, you know, you’re naked”), as well as thoughts on his family tragedies.

My pitch (to make the film) was Brando on Brando. I thought it would be amazing to tell it entirely in his own voice, especially because he was so private. It was a Freudian study. He was in psychotherapy most of his life. His life was characterized by his youth. He didn’t want to be like his father but it was inescapable.

Women’s rights speech

Gives Talk3 Comments

Obama wraps up visit to Kenya with a speech about discrimination against women.

Every country and every culture has traditions that are unique and help make that country what it is, but just because something is part of your past doesn’t make it right; it doesn’t mean it defines your future. Around the world there is a tradition of oppressing women and treating them differently and not giving them the same opportunities, and husbands beating their wives, and children not being sent to school. Those are traditions. Treating women and girls as second-class citizens. Those are bad traditions. They need to change.

Treating women as second-class citizens is a bad tradition: it holds you back. There’s no excuse for sexual assault or domestic violence, there’s no reason that young girls should suffer genital mutilation, there’s no place in a civilised society for the early or forced marriage of children. These traditions may go back centuries; they have no place in the 21st century.

Gives Talk0 Comments

Michelle Obama speaks at the opening ceremony for the 2015 Special Olympics:

Over the past few years, my husband and I have seen Americans unite in so many ways across the country. These games are a perfect reflection of that unity. They show us that we’re all in this together – that we can lift up our friends and neighbors, and that we can bring out the best in each other to reach even higher heights.
