Pluto is red-brown

Makes Statement0 Comments

New Horizons’ RALPH instrument confirms that Pluto is reddish brown probably caused by hydrocarbon molecules that are formed when cosmic rays and solar ultraviolet light interact with methane in its atmosphere and on its surface.

Pluto’s reddish color has been known for decades, but New Horizons is now allowing us to correlate the color of different places on the surface with their geology and soon, with their compositions. This will make it possible to build sophisticated computer models to understand how Pluto has evolved to its current appearance.

Cites SF death

Trump says Steinle’s murder by Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant and a repeat felon who had been deported five times to Mexico, shows that the border must be secured.

This senseless and totally preventable act of violence committed by an illegal immigrant is yet another example of why we must secure our border immediately. This is an absolutely disgraceful situation and I am the only one that can fix it. Nobody else has the guts to even talk about it. That won’t happen if I become President. The American people deserve a wall to protect our jobs, economy and our safety. I am the only candidate who would build it.

Will ‘triage’ AMA requests

Makes Statement0 Comments

Ohanian makes an announcement in regards to Taylor’s removal.

We don’t talk about specific employees, but I do want you to know that I’m here to triage AMA requests in the interim. All AMA inquiries go to AMA@reddit.com where we have a team in place…I posted this on [a mod sub] but I’m reposting here:

We get that losing Victoria has a significant impact on the way you manage your community. I’d really like to understand how we can help solve these problems, because I know r/IAMA thrived before her and will thrive after…We’re prepared to help coordinate and schedule AMAs. I’ve got the inbound coming through my inbox right now and many of the people who come on to do AMAs are excited to do them without assistance (most recently, the noteworthy Channing Tatum AMA).

This is met with harsh criticism and has a total comment score of under -2500.

‘Who is doing the raping?’

Interview0 Comments

In an CNN interview with lemon, Trump says his comments on illegal immigrationa are backed up by this article on Fusion.com:

Well if you look at the statistics of people coming, you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country it’s mind-boggling! If you go to Fusion, you will see a story: About 80% of the women coming in, you know who owns Fusion? Univision! Go to Fusion and pick up the stories on rape. It’s unbelievable when you look at what’s going on. So all I’m doing is telling the truth.

When Lemon says that the press stories are about women being raped, but not about criminals coming across the border, Trump responds:

Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don! I mean somebody’s doing it! Who’s doing the raping? Who’s doing the raping? How can you say such a thing.

He also tells Lemon he is surprised he’s trailing Jeb Bush:

I don’t get it. He’s in favor of Common Core, extremely weak on immigration. He thinks people come over for love. I don’t understand why he’s in first place. Maybe it’s the Bush name. Last thing we need is another Bush. But I will tell you, I’m a little surprised he’s in the position he’s in.

rita-ora-maria-claire-july-2015-cover-2-leadOra appears on the July cover of Marie Claire magazine:

I would rip my T-shirts and be really punk and not clean. And I would have blonde hair, really dark eyebrows, red lipstick, lots of fake rings that made my fingers go green. I wouldn’t be smelling that great…. But me and my friends, we were really, like, rebel-y. I feel like I lived a lot when I shouldn’t have.

Path clear

Makes Statement0 Comments

This illustration shows some of the final images used to determine that the coast is clear for New Horizons' flight through the Pluto system. These images show the difference between two sets of 48 combined 10-second exposures with New Horizons Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) camera, taken at 8:40 UTC and 10:25 UTC on June 26, 2015, from a range of 21.5 million kilometers (approximately 13 million miles) to Pluto. The known small moons, Nix, Hydra, Kerberos and Styx, are visible as adjacent bright and dark pairs of dots, due to their motion in the 105 minutes between the two image sets. The images have been extensively processed to remove the glare and "ghosts" (i.e., lens flare) from Pluto and Charon, and also to remove background stars, though many of the brighter stars are imperfectly removed and appear as irregular bright and dark blobs. These and other similar sets of images demonstrate that there are no previously unknown moons brighter than 15 times fainter than Styx (the faintest known moon) in the region outside of Charon's orbit, or brighter than five times fainter than Styx in the region between Charon's orbit and a few thousand kilometers above Pluto's surface. After a detailed search for dust clouds, rings, and other potential hazards, the New Horizons team decides the spacecraft will remain on its original path through the Pluto system instead of making a late course correction to detour around any hazards. Because the probe is traveling at 49,600 km/h (30,800 mph), a particle as small as a grain of rice could be lethal.

We’re breathing a collective sigh of relief knowing that the way appears to be clear. The science payoff will be richer as we gather data from the optimal flight path, as opposed to having to conduct observations from one of the back-up trajectories

Two faces of Pluto

Makes Statement0 Comments

Pluto shows two remarkably different sides in these color images of the planet and its largest moon Charon taken by New Horizons on June 25 and June 27. The images were made from black-and-white images combined with lower-resolution color data. The left image shows the side of Pluto that will be seen at highest resolution when New Horizons makes its close approach on July 14. The hemisphere is dominated by a very dark region that extends along the equator. The right image is of the side that faces Charon; the most dramatic feature on this side of Pluto is a row of dark spots arranged along the equator. (The equator appears near the bottom of the images, as only about half of the planet is shown.)NASA releases photos that show Pluto’s two different faces. The right photo shows a series of four evenly spaced dark spots along the equator. The left photo shows the hemisphere the probe will view as it flies by.

It’s a real puzzle—we don’t know what the spots are, and we can’t wait to find out.

CDC: Don’t kiss chickens

Makes Statement0 Comments

CDC links Salmonella outbreak affecting at least 181 people in 40 states to affectionate behavior between people and live poultry. CDC recommends regularly washing hands from handling poultry, keeping live poultry away from homes, and breastfeeding to protect infants from salmonella.

86 percent of the 95 ill people who were interviewed reported contact with live poultry in the week before their illness bag … [Many] reported kissing or cuddling with their live poultry.

Photo mislabelling apology

Apology0 Comments

Google apologises for its photo recognition software mislabelling a black couple as being “gorillas”.

We’re appalled and genuinely sorry that this happened, we are taking immediate action to prevent this type of result from appearing. There is still clearly a lot of work to do with automatic image labelling, and we’re looking at how we can prevent these types of mistakes from happening in the future. [The Company is] also working on longer-term fixes around both linguistics – words to be careful about in photos of people – and image recognition itself – eg better recognition of dark-skinned faces.

Univision: Trump suit ‘ridiculous’

Makes Statement0 Comments

Univision responds to Trump’s suit:

We just reviewed Mr. Trump’s complaint for the first time, and it is both factually false and legally ridiculous. We will not only vigorously defend the case, but will continue to fight against Mr. Trump’s ongoing efforts to run away from the derogatory comments he made on June 16th about Mexican immigrants. Our decision to end our business relationship with Mr. Trump was influenced solely by our responsibility to speak up for the community we serve.

Trained with museum gunman

Condition worsens

Makes Statement0 Comments

Bobbi Kristina is removed from the hospital, taken off all medications and moved to hospice care, after being taken to Chicago on a medical plane to see specialists. Source:

They too confirmed what Atlanta doctors had been saying that there was no hope. That’s when she was taken off all meds and any artificial means of support. It seems that he [Bobby Brown] had to get a certain amount of confirmation before really letting go. That trip is what convinced him to allow them to take her off her meds and to ‘go naturally

She barely has any signs of life, hardly any vitals. Security has been beefed up and even local law enforcement have been called because the families have been told that death is now imminent and they want to make sure that photographers don’t get pictures of her body being removed.

Practiced prison break

Makes Statement0 Comments

Sweat tells police that he and Matt conducted a practice run of their prison break the night before they disappeared. The night before they broke out, Sweat and Matt went through the tunnels and popped their heads up at a manhole, but decided it wasn’t isolated enough, so they decided to escape from a different manhole instead. DA:

To make a dry run and have the ability to escape, and then go back in, it is a little baffling.

ISIS fight ‘is the struggle of our generation’

Makes Statement2 Comments

In the aftermath of the Tunisia attack, Cameron has stated that the fight against the Islamic State is “the struggle of our generation”. He elaborated on his perspective by stating that:

I think that frankly, we are a target. They have declared war on us, they are attacking our people at home and overseas whether we like it or not… They are attacking our way of life and what we stand for. There are people in Iraq and Syria who are plotting to carry out terrible acts in Britain and elsewhere and as long as ISIL exists in those two countries we are at threat…It’s a battle of our values and our narrative against their values and their narrative. We have to get that right as well as the military end of things…We have to deal with this appalling radical narrative that’s taking over the minds of young people in our country.

Cameron says the UK must have a “full-spectrum response” to the IS threat – including continuing with air strikes. When asked if British troops were needed on the ground, he added:

Our strategy is to build up local armies. It’s much easier to just invade a country… it’s easier and faster, but that has consequences.

Graham talks with Cloudant’s Miller about the new role developers play in society:

Programmers are becoming more powerful. It used to be that programmers had their tools chosen for them by managers. Now increasingly the can pick their tools and the managers have no choice but to go on with it. Everybody knows this phrase BYOD –Bring Your Own Device. But there’s another phenomenon happening, where you bring your own tools — BYOT.

Speeds up

Makes Statement0 Comments

New Horizons fires its thrusters for 23 seconds speeding up about a half mile per hour in order to perfect its course through the Pluto system. Without the adjustment, the probe would have arrived 20 seconds late and 114 miles (184 kilometers) off-target from the spot where it will measure the properties of Pluto’s atmosphere. Those measurements depend on radio signals being sent from Earth to New Horizons at precise times as the spacecraft flies through the shadows of Pluto and Pluto’s largest moon, Charon. The probe is 16 million km (10 million miles) from the Pluto system and about 4.75 billion km (2.95 billion miles) from Earth.

This maneuver was perfectly performed by the spacecraft and its operations team. Now we’re set to fly right down the middle of the optimal approach corridor.

Condemns attacks

Makes Statement0 Comments

President Buhari condemns the latest terrorist attacks by the Boko Haram terrorists describing them as enemies of everybody. He also vows to hunt down the militants to the last man. The President says he is deeply touched by these mindless incidents of violence on innocent people during the month of Ramadan.

Make no mistake about it: this government is ever determined to discharge its fundamental duty of protecting the lives of its citizens from physical threats from any groups bent on creating chaos, confusion, and on destroying social and economic life of the people.

Flees country

Makes Statement0 Comments

Ntavyohanyuma, the head of Burundi’s parliament, says he has fled the country for Belgium due to violence

For the moment, I am forced to stay in Brussels… I stayed here given the difficulties in my country, difficulties which are due to the illegal third mandate of the president. On the eve of the election … I would like to say to him (Nkurunziza) that the mandate he wants to have is illegal. I would like to say to him that forcing through the election is senseless

Official statement: Mitchell speaking, improving

Mitchell’s official website elaborates on her condition, saying the artist is speaking and her condition is improving:

Joni did in fact suffer an aneurysm. However, details that have emerged in the past few days are mostly speculative. The truth is that Joni is speaking, and she’s speaking well. She is not walking yet, but she will be in the near future as she is undergoing daily therapies. She is resting comfortably in her own home and she’s getting better each day. A full recovery is expected.
