Hanks writes an Op-Ed in the New York Times about his love for typewriters, and the sounds they make:
In 1978, the proprietor of a Cleveland business machine shop refused to service my mostly plastic typewriter. “A worthless toy!” the man yelled. Yes, yelled. He pointed to shelves full of his refurbished typewriters — already decades old yet all in perfect working order. A typewriter was a machine, he yelled, which could be dropped from an airplane and still work! He gave me a deal on a Hermes 2000 (“The Cadillac of typewriters!”)
I confess that when real work has to be done — documents with requirements equal to a college term paper — I use a computer. The start and stop of writing begs for the fluidity of modern technology, and who doesn’t love choosing a new font like Franklin Gothic Medium, Bernard MT Condensed or Plantagenet Cherokee?
The sound of typing is one reason to own a vintage manual typewriter — alas, there are only three reasons, and none of them are ease or speed. In addition to sound, there is the sheer physical pleasure of typing; it feels just as good as it sounds, the muscles in your hands control the volume and cadence of the aural assault so that the room echoes with the staccato beat of your synapses.
$200K National Recording Preservation Foundation donation
White donates $200,000 to help launch the National Recording Preservation Foundation. The donation allows the foundation to start awarding grants and debut its National Recording Preservation Plan. Chairman Brylawski:
With its national plan, the Library of Congress has laid the groundwork for the long-term preservation of our audio history but the challenges to achieving this at a significant scale are daunting. I hope that Mr. White’s extraordinarily generous donation inspires many others, especially those in the recording business — record companies, artists, songwriters, and others — to follow his lead to help ensure that we are able to preserve and make accessible recent and historical recordings at risk of loss.

Becomes grandfather

Berry, Martinez marry
Berry and Martinez marry at Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France. In accordance with French law, a civil union was held at 4 p.m., followed by a religious ceremony at 5:30 p.m. at the chapel in the village. Around 60 guests, including Martinez’s brother, Vincent, and mother, Rosemarie, were in attendance. Following the ceremony in the chapel, wedding guests enjoyed a celebratory dinner, followed by a fireworks display and dancing until 1am.
Kimmel, McNearney marry
The late night host and his long time girlfriend wed in Ojai, California at the Ojai Valley Inn. The weekend is full of wedding events such as a post wedding brunch and a meet and greet with the bride and groom in a barn near the ceremony location.

I thought it was an incredible David and Goliath story in the age of the internet… I initially thought it was a story about a fascinating new technology, this idea of the leaking machine. So that’s what originally motivated me. My reasons for doing the film changed as I learned more about the story.
